like so many others, i have spent many hours today watching the news. watching people be airlifted off their roofs and all the terrible destruction.
after a little bit, i started wondering why there were so few helicopters helping with these evacuations. every news channel had helicopters in the air, doing very wide angle shots of the total level of destruction. however, you would never see more than one rescue helicopter going around at a time. why wasn't the sky swarming with helicopters? it looks like they probably couldn't have had more than 5 helicopters in new orleans doing these rescues. seriously, if you look at some of that footage, you can see almost the whole city.
granted, their operation will be spread very thin. they cannot do everything and are doing the best they can. but when there are more news helicopters than rescue helicopters, that is troubling. why not requisition some of those news helicopters and use them to help the operation?
i watched a man on the news crying, saying how he was holding on to his wife's arm as the waters rose and how she told him she couldn't hold on and to look after their children. she was then swept away by the flood waters. later, i go on the internet and look at some stuff. i find out that while these floodwaters were rising and killing people, this is what our "leader" was doing:
he was giving a commemorative speech on V-J day in california, then had a cute little "rock-out" session. this was today, tuesday. yesterday, as katrina pounded louisiana and mississippi, he went to a resort in arizona and played some golf. when his plane landed in arizona, he was greeted by john mccain. they shared a nice photo opportunity:
happy birthday and all, mr. mccain, but maybe there are better things for the president to be doing than playing pin the tail on the donkey with you.
but wait, that's not all! bush diverted new orleans disaster funds (meant to rebuild those levees that broke) in order to fund the war in iraq! the national guard should be on hand to deal with exactly this sort of emergency, but guess what, they're in iraq! there are no amphibious vehicles that the remaining guardsmen could use to help evacuate people, because for some reason, bush sent amphibious vehicles to fight a war in a desert!
and more and more and more. however, i am far too pissed off to keep writing right now. i recommend looking at
americablog, which touches upon all the tousands of things bush has screwed up in these last couple of days.
what happened with this hurricane was absolutely terrible, but i can't help but think if we had better leadership, it wouldn't be quite so catastropic.
