Sonny unfolded the piece of paper carefully, the creases and edges well-formed and handled. For the first time since he was a kid he'd not waited until New Year's to check on his resolution. This year had been very different for very different reasons.

~~

2013 - buy an apartment with Will. Our first home together.

Will was still asleep next to him when he grabbed the pen and a piece of paper. This was, without a doubt, the best way he could start the new year and he hoped that this would be the first of many.

Get Will Horton to fall in love with me.

It had seemed like such a pipe dream when he'd written it. Will hadn't even been out, wasn't even being honest with himself. He'd given himself twelve months to wait, to be there, and to hope.

Beside him Will shifted, moving in a little closer. Sonny dropped a hand to his side, his fingers dragging through Will's hair which immediately settled him. This was the life he wanted, needed, and the idea was settling somewhere near his heart and not going away. He wanted, needed Will here all the time. It didn't matter that they spent most nights together, most days come to think of that. He wanted, needed to know that Will would always be there.

His first thought was to write down about them living together but then weren't they pretty much doing that already? If he woke Will and asked him now then he'd say yes. Of course he would.

Wouldn't he?

And anyway, wasn't this a time to dream big?

Looking for inspiration Sonny looked around his apartment; the small studio room which was nothing like the family mansion, nothing like the apartment Will had when he was working for EJ. If - when - Will moved in, where would he move his stuff in to? There was just enough space here for his own things, he could clear some room in the closet and then this place could be theirs and--

Their place. Theirs. Somewhere they made their own instead of Sonny making room for Will. Something permanent. Something that would be theirs.

He wrote down his resolution and dropped it into the tin. Turning off the light he shuffled down under the covers and allowed Will's warm body to wrap around his and lull him into sleep.

~~

2013 - buy an apartment with Will. Our first home together.
2013 - find a new boyfriend.

He'd broken his rule within weeks but then he had a very good reason for that. Buying somewhere with Will wasn't an option anymore. Doing anything with Will wasn't an option anymore. He needed to move on with his life, find new goals and challenges.

He thought about travelling, seeing countries that he hadn't before. He thought about expanding the business, opening another branch of Common Grounds somewhere else. Somewhere else he could move to, get away from Salem and Will from time to time?

Not for the first time Sonny cursed himself for bringing everything back to Will. So much for trying to get over him, trying to move on.

Things were going to be different now. In the space of a year he got Will Horton to fall in love with him, so he could take the last 11 months of 2013 falling out of love with Will Horton, maybe finding someone else?

Before he could change his mind he crossed out the first resolution and wrote the second, shoving the piece of paper back into the tin before heading back to work.

2013 - buy an apartment with Will. Our first home together.
2013 - find a new boyfriend.
2013 - Get Will back and never EVER let him go again.

Moving on had failed, spectacularly. There had been a few guys, a few dates. The odd kiss and one guy who had been... very hands-on.

And none of them, not one, had made him feel even a fraction of what he felt when Will did something simple like touch his hand. Even before they were together. Sonny had to face facts; he was utterly in love with Will and so that left him two options.

One: he could continue to feel like this, love a man he wasn't with and miss him and continue hating him for lying.

Two: he could try and deal with it and fix things.

Option One did nothing but hurt him and hurt Will (which then hurt him some more) so it left Option Two by default.

Time had given him perspective, time for Sonny to think about what Will must have been going through. He'd overheard his parents talking, more than once, about the situation and it had actually been something that Sami had said which made him stop and take notice.

This was a lot for Will to deal with. Life-changing. And it all happened when things were new between them, when they were finding their feet and discovering how they could be together. And Sonny had been thinking about it, what he'd have said and done had Will come back that night and told him the truth.

He knew. He knew that had he been told it could have destroyed them. It could have been too much too soon and they never would have gotten to the point where he knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Will. Finding out that he - they were going to be parents would have been a massive amount of pressure.

Pressure which yes, Will was right, could have broken them without any chance of reconciliation.

Lies can be forgiven, situations can be understood.

Sonny put a line through his resolution and thought about what he was about to write. He wanted it, more than anything, but it wasn't going to be easy. Realising that most things in life weren't he took a breath before writing down the only thing he wanted now.

2013 - find an apartment with a room for the baby. Buy it with Will. Our first FAMILY home together.

"You sure?" Will asked. "The one across town was fine--"

"But further away from family, work, and everything else," Sonny replied. "This is better."

"And almost twice the price."

"You know it's not a problem--"

"I know, I just... feel bad I can't contribute as much--"

"Will, stop. We are doing this, you and me. This is not my place this is our place. And what's mine is yours, OK?"

"Yeah, but this? This is too much."

"Will," Sonny said firmly, taking his partner's hands in his, "listen to me. This is how things are going. We are going to buy this apartment and turn that spare room into a nursery for your daughter. This is going to be her home, we are going to be a part of her life."

"I know, but--"

"But nothing," Sonny cut across. "If this is what you want then I will support you a hundred percent. I will back you and do anything I can to help you. That starts with making sure we have a home for her."

"We," Will said, a grin spreading across his face.

"What?"

"You said 'we'. We are providing a home for her."

"Because we are."

"There's that word again. We."

"Are you OK?" Sonny laughed. "Yes, we. Us. You and me. This should not be a surprise."

"It's not. I just love hearing you say it. Like..."

"Like what?"

"Like this is really happening."

"The baby or the apartment?"

"Both?" Will said. "I just... I don't know what I've done to deserve this. You, the baby... This place."

"So. Are we signing this or not?"

"Try and stop me."

"Hey, it's going to be fine." Sonny grabbed Will's hand and gave it a squeeze. "We have a good case. Better than theirs."

"You're biased."

"I'm honest. We're settled, secure. We have two of the biggest families in Salem on our side so we're never going to be short of--"

"Interfering family members?" Will finished.

Sonny gave a short laugh and put his head on Will's shoulder. "We can give that girl such a good life."

"You know that and I know that. I just hope that judge knows it too."

"Well, Dad's is pretty determined and when he wants something he gets it."

"My parents said the same thing about you. Must be a Kiriakis thing."

"What?"

"Getting what you want. I mean, you wanted me so I didn't stand a chance, did I?"

"Not a chance."

"What if we don't get this? What if--"

"OK, enough," Sonny said firmly, sitting up so he could look at Will. "We tried being reasonable, we tried working out an agreement with Gabi but. Well. You know how that worked out. We have tried everything but they have left us no option and made it quite clear that if they have their way neither of us would be in her life. At least with us we'd realise that Gabi's her mother. So this, this is the best thing. We get it set in stone, custody from the start."

"What if we don't? What if--?"

"We will."

"You sure about this? Custody is a lot to ask--"

"I'm sure," Sonny told him. With a firm kiss he sat up and held out his hand. "Never been more sure of anything. Well, expect maybe you."

"Me too," Will replied, slipping his hand into Sonny's and not letting it go. "We are doing the right thing? My parents--"

"Are not you. We are never going to make that little girl feel like a prize, or that she's not got a home. I promise you."

"Thank you."

"I'll go," Will muttered, still half asleep as he rolled out of bed. Across the baby monitor the little girl's cries sounded deafening and Sonny's heart clenched. "Go back to sleep."

"Not happening," he replied, pushing back the covers. "You get her, I'll get the milk."

"Thank you," Will replied, his voice heavy with the tone of exhaustion. "And I'm sorry. Again."

"She's teething, it's expected."

"Have we got any of the gel left?"

"I bought more today."

"And this is why I love you," Will said, managing to smile before he walked into the nursery.

The baby's cries softened a little and Sonny busied himself by getting the teething gel out and setting it on the counter before removing the formula from the cupboard and starting to make up a bottle. When he heard a gentle whimper behind him he turned to see that Will had brought her out of her room.

In the five months since she arrived, red face and screaming the hospital down, Sonny had seen Will hold his daughter so many times he'd lost count. In the hospital that day, when they'd brought her home. The first night they had her and every other time since. The way Will was with her just made Sonny love him more.

(Will had, on more than one occasion, said the same thing. Because apparently Sonny was very taken with this little girl and it showed every time he was near her. Sonny knew this to be true; she was just as much his daughter as she was Will's.)

"I think I'm starting to forget what sleep is like," Will said as he sat down on one of the breakfast bar chairs. "Does it make me a bad father to wish she could spend the night somewhere else?"

"It just makes you human," Sonny replied. "A very tired human. Here, let me take her."

"No, we're good," Will replied, unconsciously holding her that little bit closer. "She's just hungry and it's my turn to feed her."

"You say that like we actually keep track," Sonny laughed as he tested the bottle on his wrist. Once he'd determined it was fine he walked over to where they were, handing the bottle over and kissing Will's forehead. Then he stood behind them, wrapping his arms loosely around Will's chest, while they watched the girl with bright eyes stare up at them.

Will reached over and took the paper from Sonny's hand. "Wow. Lot of corrections this year."

"Busy year."

"Good one though?"

Sonny turned on the bed so he was facing Will and smiled. "Overall I'd say it's been the best one I've had."

"I like this last one," Will said, turning his attention back to the paper. "And I never will forget the look on your mom's face when we asked her."

"I'll never forget what Dad said as we left," Sonny replied. "He told me that all new parents go through 'dry spells' so they're happy to babysit as often as we need."

"Maybe they should keep her," Will quipped, no hint of seriousness in his voice. "I mean, it has been so long since we've had some real time to ourselves."

"We've had plenty," Sonny pointed out, but Will was already crawling towards him. "Stop making it sound like she's ruining our lives."

"Our sex life, maybe," Will grinned as Sonny began to crawl backwards up the bed in a vain attempt to move away.

"We do just fine."

"We could do better."

"And isn't that why we have tonight?"

"One of the reasons," Sonny grinned as he was backed up to the headboard. Will continued crawling over his body until he was pressed flushed against him. "I just wanted to spend the New Year with you."

"Me too," Will whispered before closing the last distance between them for the kiss.

~~

"It's weird," Will said as he reached over and picked up the baby monitor. "I miss it going off."

"You miss her. And that's fine. Natural. It's the first time she's spent a night away from us and--"

"And you miss her too."

"So much!"

"Is it too early to go and get her?"

"It's not even three in the morning. I'm going to say yes."

"So, what resolution are you making for 2014?" Will asked.

"I can't think of anything I want," Sonny replied, his fingers running through Will's hair. "I have everything I want."

"Almost," Will said, sitting up and moving away from Sonny's hand. "But I'm hoping this will fill in the gaps." He reached under the bed and pulled out a large envelope which he handed to Sonny. "I'm sorry I didn't think about it sooner, it would have been a better Christmas present. But it was watching you at Christmas which made me realise. So I talked to your dad and he got them drawn up for me. Very efficient of him I might add, but then he said it involved his granddaughter so--"

"What are these?" Sonny asked, looking through the papers. "I don't--"

"It's the closest to adoption we can get at the moment. Basically it gives you the right to make decisions for her, medical stuff, things like that. And it states that if something happens to me then you get custody."

"Will--"

"You're her dad, just as much as I am. And I want that right to be protected. So does your dad by the way, he came up with some stuff I'd not even thought about. You know that when she starts school you wouldn't be on any of the preferred contact lists without me and Gabi signing stuff? Or that, if they wanted to, Gabi and Nick could make an issue of you having her here by yourself?"

"Well, Dad's pretty good at this legal stuff," Sonny said. "Are you sure about this? Wouldn't it give me rights if we... split up?"

"Is that going to happen?"

"Not if I have any say in the matter."

"The way I see it is this. You and I are raising her, and it's not right that just because biologically she's mine that you don't get as many rights. This is me starting to fix that. Some of the stuff you have to be involved in, I wanted to surprise you."

"I don't know what to say."

"Don't say, just sign," Will said, indicating the space at the bottom where the line was waiting for his signature, right next to Will's and Justin's. "2014, the year of our family."

"I like that," Sonny grinned, grabbing his pen from the night stand. Instead of signing the papers as Will had thought he would, Sonny scribbled something on a scrap piece of paper and handed it over.

2014 - have The Talk with Will about what we want for our future. Marriage? More kids? Then make a start on that.
