He’s always loved the water.
It’s how I met him for the very first time…
Slipping on my swimming trunks and picking up my goggles, I breathed in deeply. The scent of chlorine was expectantly prominent in the slightly muggy, steamy air.
I padded barefoot out of the changing rooms and into the space where there sat a large swimming pool, with a smaller sized one nearby. I sat on the edge of the large expanse of water and for a minute just surveyed my surroundings. People of all ages and abilities had descended upon this building and apart from a few fearful, whimpering children in the small pool, the sounds of laughter and chatter floated up and bounced off the powder blue walls, creating an echo.
When I had decided to get fully into the water, I lowered myself slowly in then let out a sigh of contentment. This is where I belonged.
I came to the local swimming baths a lot, in fact, ever since I was taught to swim at a young age. I enjoyed the freedom of moving through the water however I wished. I enjoyed the feel of the water running over my skin, leaving me shivery and covered in gooseflesh until I immersed myself once more. I enjoyed being able to dive in and imagine a life that was situated completely underwater.
I casually glanced up to the diving boards that were across from me, and my mouth opened in instantly hypnotised awe. I’d just seen the most gorgeous looking guy ever. I guessed that he was about my age. From my stationery position, I could only see that he was dark haired and that he had a lithe yet very well toned body. Such visionary information was enough to make my mind quickly conclude that I found him attractive, despite him being a total stranger to me.
I turned around and leant my arms on the side of the pool. For a while, I fell into a…well, I suppose you could call it a daydream and was only rudely jolted from my deep thoughts when someone swam up and crashed into me.
“What the hell?!” I exclaimed, facing the person who moved up to the surface and panted audibly.
Whoever it was had obviously been swimming underwater and probably holding their breath. But if that was so then how did they not notice me, standing in the water?
“Swim or get out, mate” he responded huffily and my eyes widened as he pushed up his slicked down fringe and I realised who it was.
It was him! The guy I’d seen on the diving board, looking focused and impressive.
I tried a few times to utter at least a word, maybe “Hi” for a start, but all of a sudden my vocal chords didn’t seem to want to work. I closed my mouth eventually, giving up on acting like a goldfish, although such a creature probably looked more intelligent than me at that moment.
“What?” the guy demanded, staring at me closely, impatiently, with penetrating topaz eyes.
The rippling water that had settled around us both was reflecting in his gaze magnificently and regardless of his frosty reception (although surely he was the person in the wrong here?), I felt the need to be pleasant towards him.
“I saw you up there” I smiled slightly, pointing behind him at the highest diving board.
He moved to beside me and looked towards where he had dived from, how long ago I wasn’t sure. I watched his face alter, his features softening and his eyes almost clouding over. It seemed that perhaps he loved this place as much as me, if not more.
“You’re…er…impressive”
I stopped trying to instigate some kind of conversation after my remark as I felt my face grow hot. That embarrassment faded however when he turned his head to look at me and, as luck would have it, to reply.
“Thanks”
I saw the faintest of smiles and grasped onto that millisecond and dragged it into my heart. I knew I was being irrational and probably too obvious towards him but I couldn’t help myself. It may not have been love but it was certainly lust at first sight.
Reaching my hand out of the water and noticing droplets sliding off my fingertips and into the translucent oblivion again, I implied a handshake. His flesh against mine felt comfortable and wondrously exciting in equal measures.
“I’m Tom. And you are…?”
“Danny” he answered and I actually noticed his voice, his accent, instead of the tangible him.
I nodded then grinned, “Well then Danny, let this be a hello and goodbye all in one”
I gathered all my mental strength to push off from the side and began to swim away from him. I hid my shy smile by ducking underwater as I felt his presence nearby…
He followed me in silence and from that day on, something grew. Friendship morphed leisurely into mutual attraction until we arrived at relationship status. Inseparable. That’s us.
Over and out
