Her heart raced. The words on her lips were well thought-out and she let each one resound in her head before it left her mouth.Conversations were easily a dead-end, with a routine of questions and predictable answers. But this night was different.
"I'll jump!" He threatened, she climbed over to where he was sitting in the large oak tree. The only evidence of wind were the shaky silhouettes of the tree limbs against the silver moon. She grabbed his hand, searching for his eyes to meet hers, but he looked away.
"I'll never let go..." She whispered, he stared at the ground, a distance of six or seven feet below them.
Suddenly, his hand slipped out of hers and he shot to the ground. She gasped, fear stitched all over her face. Climbing down the tree as fast as she could, she was soon by his side. A box that was fastened shut by a large padlock tumbled out of his coat pocket. Light, of whitest color, seeped out the cracks of the box; the seem between the box and the lid. Her lips were sewn shut, confusion in her eyes.
"Don't open that!" He cried, she held it tightly between her two palms.
"What is it?" She again searched desperately to see into his eyes, he stared at the box in her hands. A long moment of silence passed between them. The steady light from the box thrust beams into the dark night and tears glided on the edge of her eyelids.
"Secrets." He whispered, "Secrets that no one must know." He paused to wipe tears from his own eyes. His eyes finally met hers as he spoke, "I must carry these burdens alone..." She took one of his hands, cold as ice, and put it on her cheek. She held it there until she felt it grow warmer. "This box is my defeat," He stood, brushing leaves off of his clothing and reaching for the box in her hand. She could see the pain that consumed him, she could taste it in the air. She felt it in the coldness of his fingers and it broke her brittle heart. "I'm sorry..." He whispered once again as he turned and walked away.
And when she could no longer hear the his footsteps crunching autumn leaves, she buried her head in her hands. Sobbing quietly, helplessness bred fury into her heart.
"I want to release you, i want you to break free." She whispered softly, "If i could only find the key..."
