In all honestly, the old "man gets drunk - man rapes woman - woman gets pregnant - women just cannot hate her child and will defend her no matter what" mechanism gets very old. They're usually left dammaged. They sometimes cannot stand their child because of what it means to them. They may try to first aborpt, too (in all times there has been ways to do so, even if it could be painful and dangerous; it wasn't a marginal occurence).

I don't want to sound mean at all but... it's been used and used again and it's just... not so close from reality, and a cheap scenario arrangement. 'Plus it's not just any man, it's the angry-preacher-who's-sexually-frustrated-or-otherwise-not-Good (here, doing something socially "wrong" like having sex outside of marriage, which is bad-badb-ad for someone in his position), that's like mega-cliché. Of course at times many member of the Church abused of their power, but... still.
