The Unlikeliest Cavalry

Once it's clear he and Estella aren't going to solve the riddle of where the Nexus has hidden the Narada, McCoy decides he'll just have to bite the bullet and contact the first officer. Besides, protocol demands that Spock be informed that he's currently in command. Thank goodness for private transmission frequencies. Last thing he needs is someone ( Read more... )

"I'll look..." She taps in a few commands to prep another search, and looks up at McCoy. "Are you hoping to negotiate, or just track him down via prolonged conversation and your basic interdimensional trace? I think he could probably be manipulated into talking to someone, depending on who it was."

(Like a certain Vulcan, though she does not know that.)

"Wouldn't waste my time negotiating with that madman," Bones retorts. "No, I just thought it would be something useful, maybe."

"Good, 'cause I was gonna say, the only way you can handle that kind of guy is fighting fire with fire," she says, shaking her head - she returns to the computer for a few seconds, to see what she can come up with on tracking frequencies. (Or rather the spirit inside: Stella is not any kind of hacker, but she does a remarkable job impersonating one owing to be able to talk to what's inside.)

"We should hold off on deciding 'til your friends get here, but I'll keep looking."

Spock never goes anywhere without a way of being contacted, and so McCoy's communicator will now indicate an incoming transmission. If it somehow manages to sound irritated, it's because Spock is simply that good.

Bones just knows that's Spock on the other end of the line, so to speak, and he sighs grumpily as he holds up a finger to indicate to Estella that this may well be those 'friends' they're waiting for.

"McCoy here."

"Doctor McCoy, I am curious as to what it is you think necessitates my presence in a bar." Bones probably remembers this tone from shortly after Spock had Kirk removed from the ship, and time has not softened it. "I believe such areas are the captain's expertise, not mine."

Stella does not envy Bones' position here. "I take it he's the Rahm Emanuel onboard," she murmurs.

Bones pauses a moment to think over his history lessons and then barks a laugh. "You'd be right about that one." He rolls his eyes and replies to Spock's question with an equally no-nonsense tone.

"Believe I said outside the damn bar. There's a problem." Reluctantly, after a second's pause he adds, "Involving the Captain."

"What has he done?" This is an entirely logical question. Kirk, a bar, and a problem - he has done something illogical, likely violent or lewd, and now requires extraction.

He retrieves his new PADD and begins reassigning shifts, suspecting that this will be an involved activity. The main question is who to leave the bridge to.

Not the response Bones was hoping for, there. Of course Spock would have to demand details, when he should be hightailing his ass over there.

"For God's sake, man, don't make it sound like he broke someone's window! The Captain has been taken prisoner. By Nero."

Spock is silent for exactly three seconds, which is long enough for him to retain his composure.

"I will arrive shortly with Lieutenant Uhura. Do you require any equipment from the ship?"

It's not that Bones enjoys torturing people (not even Spock), but he's glad for the quick reaction.

"Right now we still don't even know where the hell they are. But if the two of you can think of anything that might make tracking PINpoint addresses or comm signals any easier, bring it along."

"Understood. Spock out." With that, he closes his communicator. A Vulcan's work is never done.

Well at least Bones can appreciate that Vulcan efficiency at the moment. He grimaces at Estella, sort of apologetically, because well. She's going to have to deal with meeting Spock.

"They're on their way."

Stella figures she's handled worse; they're all going to be stressed out, for good reason.

"Good." She briefly considers going to find shoes, but maybe later. It's not like she really needs them there.

The time dilation (why it allows for normal communication but abnormal absences is a study for another day) results in Spock arriving only a few minutes later, Uhura by his side. She choose the equipment they have brought with them, but he is carrying it, and - unrelatedly - first officer Spock looks suspiciously like someone who slept in the uniform he is wearing and did not have the chance to arrange his hair in the morning.

"Doctor McCoy, I-" He pauses, noticing Stella. "Have you recruited assistance, doctor?"
