It just suddenly hit me how much we take for granted. It's been a really weird week, month really, for me, and for a while, i thought i was completely losing it, and now i realize maybe i'm just finally getting it together! :) I was laying in bed, trying to sleep, thinking about things, and i just had to get up and get some of this off my chest...
Today, i talked to a guy who was born and raised in bosnia, and we talked breifly about how here we take our safety for granted, and i was like "Ya know, i can't remember the last time i was afraid that at any moment, some one might drop a bomb on my house" and he said "I can." please take a moment to let that sink in.......
(Note: this is NOT a rant about war, or politics)
Continue to let that sink in moment.... I mean REALLY think about that...
Ok... now lets recap I'm sitting talking to a guy, not too much older than me, and he just said he remembers the time he had to seriously worry about his safety, sitting in his home, or walking to store on the corner, or playing in the park with his friends.
Today i also saw one of those save the children type commercials, we've all seen them, it's almost like we've been desensitised to it. And they showed this little girl, she was working in a field of some sort with other little kids, we all know the scene. They asked this little girl how old she was, her response was "I'm sorry, but I don't know". Now stop.
Think about that:
You're a small child, you have no parents, no home, it's hott, you're busting your ass so hopefully you can eat today, and you have no idea how long you've been alive.
For some reason, this one commercial, this one time, really made me think.
Lastly, I read a little bit about Tantric Buddhism today. (We've all heard of tantra, tantric sex, great orgasms, yadda yadda, well apparently there really is a whole religion behing it) This was mildly inspired by the movie Go and Wedding Crashers. Anyway, curiosity got the best of me so i looked it up. I read some things that really got me thinking.
It occured to me, that as human beings, we're given complete and total freedom, that can be absolutely hindered only by our physical capabilities. As people, we can CHOOSE to do anything we want, within the realms of physical capability. Society puts restraints on these things in the aspect that they hold people responsible for their actions and set up guidelines, and enforce consequences and punishment for certain actions. Example: I'm physically capable of walking into a public place nude, there are NO physical restrictions. However, if i CHOOSE to do this, there will be consequences because society has deemed this to be an inappropriate action. Now when you REALLY think about it, it's some what liberating, and terrifying. By choosing to accept the consequences of your actions, or inactions, you can do (or not do) absolutely anything you want.
We take SOOOOO much for granted. We have SOOOOOOO many opportunities and options and choices we can make. We can make as much or as little of our lives as we want. There are NO limitations on our wealth or poverty. We have endless amounts of resources that we can FREELY choose to use to our best advantages, or we can squander meaninglessly.
As americans, we are given certain freedoms, certain things we can do, with out fear or negative consquences. Today, i got online, and read about tantric buddhism. I was born and raised baptist. However, if i so chose, i could convert, and become a practicing buddhist. In some cultures, i would might be forbidden to research a religion (let alone practice it) other than the one my culture believes in. At any given time, i can go to the library and read about damn near anything i want to. We are given the freedom of knowledge. There is no limit to the things you can learn about. It's things like this i think no one ever stops to think about. We have the right, to do absolutely nothing with our lives. If you're ok with barely making it by, and wondering where your next meal might come from, and not being able to pay the rent and going from one shitty minimum wage job to the next, maybe with some vacations in between, thats ok. Fuck, if you want to never have a job, never pay rent, and live on the streets, fuck it, thats cool too. Hell, the government has even set up shelters for you. Ok, now lets say you came from nothing. as a child, you had one pair of clothes, sometimes you wouldn't eat for days at a time. you're parents never even went to highschool, hell, neither did you. Guess what? If you work hard enough, you can fuckin be the ceo of a multi billion dollar company. all you have to do is put your mind to it. You want to live a mediocre life? You can do that too. You can transcend or descend the social ladder with just a little bit of effort and persistence. We get to elect our world leaders. You can openly express your veiws of the government. Hell, you hate everything about the government? Think you could do it better? You can do that too!!! You can choose any career path you want. You can be as productive, or as slothful as you want. You can be as pure, or as skanky as you want to be. If you choose to live a life of chastity, you can do that. If you want to exchanged sexual favours for money, in nevada, you can do that. You can think what you want, believe what you want, say what you want. And no one can stop you. Yeah we have laws, but you have the right to dispute them. Whether or not you think of it this way, each crime is handled on a case by case basis. Yes, there are guidelines and restrictions. But everyone is entitled to a trial, to be judged by thier peers, and to be aided by a knowledgeble professional.
Ok, there's so much more on my mind, but i'm really fuckin tired. If you're still reading this, you are quite possibly as insane as i am. And i adore you for that. But it's ok, you don't have to read this, this is for me.
