Scarlette had sold some of her mother's jewelery to be able to pay for the ranch. She couldn't lose it, it was all she had left of her parents and what they had built. It hurt that she sold the stuff, but she knew she could get it back. Things like that didn't sell in Kansas. People struggled as it was.
She had however canned and bottled some of the vegetables from the harvest last year and the beginning of this year and decided to just occupy herself by making something. So by the time she had started she got an idea. Shanley would be working on the ranch all day she figured with how much needed to be done, so after her friend visited, she had sent her out to tell Shanley that dinner would be at seven. And that he was expected to be cleaned up and ready and there.
By the time seven rolled around, Scarlette had gotten a shower, changed into a dress and then was setting the stuff on the table.
Homemade mashed potatoes with fresh chives, country fried steak, biscuits and some vegetables such as green beans and summer squash from the previous season.
She smoothed the black fabric over her form and ran her fingers through the curls and then waited, leaning against the door frame for Shanley to show up.
