Job Search

You know, there are few things that can alter your self-esteem levels like looking for a job. Over the last week I've been elated, dejected, pissed off, annoyed and flabbergasted at various intervals due to the things I've encountered.

Interview with company #1 (Become, Inc.) involved me meeting everyone in the department that I would have been working with, which was 7 or 8 people. Now, that's not too bad, except for the fact that I met each one alone and interviewed for about half an hour each. And the last interview of the day consisted of three questions: "What is the definition of justice?", "What is the definition of truth?", and "What is the relationship between truth and justice?". And that one lasted for a little more than an hour. I swear, if they were trying to make me not want to work there, I don't think they could have done much better of a job.

The interview with company #2 (Centerscore) was much better. Centerscore makes video games for cell phones. The interview basically involved me solving odd problems to the satisfaction of two developers. Question #1: Given two angles A and B, find the smallest rotation required to go from A to B (for instance, if A = 350 degrees and B = 10 degrees, the answer would be 20 degrees, not -340). Question #2: find a way of being able to uniquely represent the channel, start time and duration of any TV show in a given week with a 6 digit number (i.e. it must be a one to one mapping; every number gives a unique set of data, and every set of data gives a unique 6 digit number). Question #3: Imagine you have a 2D "castle" on a screen represented by a square, and a 1 pixel "cannonball" being shot at it. Find out if, when and where the cannonball hits the castle. Question #4: Design a high level class structure for the game model of Tetris, giving it all necessary functionality.

Apparently I did pretty well on the questions, because I got an email today asking me to come in for a final round interview next Tuesday. Also, they asked me for my salary requirements. And on Monday I'm going to be interviewing at the job I really want, which is to be an educational counselor for high school and junior high school students. So, things are looking up in the job department. I believe that I will most likely get offers from the counseling job and Centerscore. Well, I hope so. If I only get one, my choice will be easy. And if I don't get either, I'll probably continue my search whether or not Become gets back to me.

Fuck George Bush.
