On some nights he sees them while he's asleep. Sometimes their faces blur together, all of them screaming and yelling, but other times he can see them with frightening clarity. Their eyes just lock on him, but they don't see him. Not really. They just stare past him, because he can see the life draining out of them as he watches.

Because he can only watch. He can't get to them in time. He can't save them.

He can never save them.

Tony has watched too many people die for him. He has blood on his hands, and he knows that no matter what he does to clean them, he can't. How many innocent people died because of him, because of his weapons? All those soldiers. Yinsen. Yinsen's family.

The people at Stark Expo.

The drivers in Monaco.

The innocent people in New York that got caught in the crossfire.

How long will it be until it's Dylan, Pepper, Happy, Rhodey - everyone he cares about? It's a thought that terrifies him, that pushes him to try to be better and try to save the world. Because he couldn't save the others, and while his motivation drives him forward, it's his necessity to keep the ones he loves safe that makes him want to be better.

It's what makes him push forward, no matter what.
