My first icon-tutorial O_O

Feb 11, 2005 12:53

OK, I tried to translate one of my icon-tutorials... I hope it's understandable, the German version was (I think...), but i'm not too sure about the English one O_O

The tutorial was written for PSP8, but I guess it can be used in other versions as well as PS.

You'll learn how to make an Icon like this:

For this Tutorial, you'll first need a texture you like. I'm using one of my own, it can be found here

Then you'll need a picture/photo (whatever you want to be on the icon) and crop it to a size smaller than 100x100 (in this case I chose 62x85).
Don't forget to sharpen the pic after resizing it.
Paste this picture onto a new Layer.

You can now turn the Picture-Layer into the main color used in the texture, you can also leave out this step since it's only a guidance how the finished icon will look like, the actual coloring will be done later.

Now you need the eraser tool: on the picture layer, erase the border of the picture to make it look less "sticked" on the background.
Use differently shaped brushes to do this.

Now create another layour above the picture one, take the airbrush tool and paint around the picture, if it looks to hard use the smudge-tool to adjust this.

Now the coloring: Dublicate the first layer (the one with the texture on it), drag it to the top and set it to 'Color (Legacy)'

The last step is to add a little border, I'm using on of my own border brushes for that (not released yet O_O), I applied the brush to a new layer and set it to 'Overlay'
And that's it :)

Please don't copy this tutorial excatly... use different textures, colors, borders and pictures. That's what tutorials are made for: to give you ideas, not instructions to copy.

Please comment if there's anything that still needs to be explained, or simply if you like/don't like this tutorial.
I'd also love to see your results.
