Whirlwind

What a frenetic, hectic week!

It started out with my coworker bringing over her "circus dog." We call her that because she is a cockapoo and looks and acts like some beast on the carnival circuit. I love dogs, but... a week with this little nightmare makes me want to stay a cat woman for life. Seriously. She's a hyper, co-dependent, manipulative little fuzzball. But, on the other hand, I love to help out a deserving coworker.

Monday morning started abruptly enough. I awoke to a call from my brand new vice principal telling me that I should go to a weeklong, 9 to 4 science conference that started that very morning. I told her that I had doctor's appointments and was heading out of town on Friday, but she said that I should go anyhow.

I'm not exactly a spontaneous person, and I was frustrated as heck with that wakeup call (I was already in an irritable mood because I had been fasting all morning for the doctor's appointment). But, after all was said and done, the conference was pretty darn interesting. It's a yearlong program, so I will have to keep committing a couple hours a month to it, but it comes with special stipends for science supplies and even pay of about 2,000. All in all, a pretty good deal considering that I would probably do this kind of professional development for free (if I weren't feeling so busy).

So I just got the key to my new room this Monday, and I am stuck in the conference all week, allowing me very little time to move all my crud from the old room. I've been getting up extra early to move a little each morning, then heading down to Carpinteria for the conference. Today I went to Santa Barbara to return Circus Dog, moved stuff to the new classroom, went to the science conference, went back to Santa Barbara to move stuff the the new classroom, and just got home. Phew. I feel guilty nonetheless... there's probably a new teacher already hired, and she/he can't move in to the portable until I move out. I don't want to make her/him wait until the last minute to prepare the room. I mean, we only have two weeks until school starts... but I'm doing the best I can considering that I had a surprise 40-hour commitment spring up on me.

The new classroom is just gorgeous. The patio has a table with umbrella, and a large shade tree is growing right there in the corner. I am in awe.

Roger and I are leaving for Vegas tomorrow. Not the greatest timing, but maybe this will be good for me. It'll help me relax. I have been an insomniac all week and having those scary teacher dreams.
