This Ratty's Gone to Heaven

Bess, one of my five class rats, passed away this morning. Roger helped me dig a grave for her under the orange tree.

Losing a rat is not like losing a fish. I was sadder about it than I thought I'd be, but I think I'm OK now.

Bess had been sickly for a few months now. She breathed heavily and seemed listless at times. Even the fifth graders noticed this. I am glad she is not uncomfortable anymore.

The weather is gray, and I am being lazy. I have been lazy all week. I haven't had a lot of motivation to do anything lately, besides read, do the dishes and water the plants. That's it. Maybe I wore myself out this school year more than I realized.

I do have to muster up some energy for the next couple weeks. I have to attend a wedding (better find my dress... it's around here somewhere!), science conference and math class. I also have to start to plan and think about the upcoming school year. I'd like it to be the easiest year yet.

I think that if I can get a good system going, I can balance my life this year. I found an excellent dog daycare center in Santa Barbara that opens at 7 and closes at 7. My plan is to take the puppy with me to Santa Barbara once or twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays will be Roger's busiest days). I can drop my pup off in the morning and then work until the evening. I can even transfer my gym membership to the Santa Barbara branch. That way, I can get in a workout while waiting for the traffic to subside (the downside of teaching homework center this year is that it lets me out a 4, which is prime traffic time). Maybe with this type of system, I can get back in shape, miss the traffic, take care of my puppy's socialization needs and get my work done in the week, leaving my weekends free. That is my goal for the year.

Kings of Leon have a new disc out in September. That is exciting! New music in time for the commute.

They are building a brand new elementary school about two or so miles from my house in Oxnard. Boy, that's tempting. It looks like it may open next year or so. It is next to the airport and so has been equipped with special sound-proof glass and walls. I love my job so much, but this sounds like something worth investigating someday...

Happy birthday to Roger!!
