Something about patrolling, even with Anita, more often than not proved itself to be one of the most mundane tasks that Freddy could name. The most you were bound to run into was a lover's spat or someone who forgot that napping on the beach in their skivvies wasn't the best plan, and even those situations were rare at best. It was, for all intents and purposes, boring. In his mind this fact made it completely respectable for him to bunk off for one day. After all, his patrols with Anita were like clockwork and just as predictable. Same terrain covered around the same time, similar conversations each time, same sort of flirting, same sort of jokes getting tossed back and forth, and while he was prone to routine, it didn't mean that he settled with it without complaint. In fact, he'd just made a comment that it might be nice to try splitting up for once, and when the reluctant agreement came, he was off like The Flash when challenged to a goddamn race.
Not that there was anywhere to go. It wasn't like high school when you cut class to go to the Arcade. Or even when you cashed in a sick day and stayed home to watch TV and jerk off at your own leisure. No, there really was nothing to do, but somehow despite the lack of activities, playing hookie was just as satisfying. Knowing his and his partner's system so well, he knew where to be to not get caught, and even if he did, there was a good chance he could talk his way out of a reprimand. In fact, despite living on an island, he hadn't been down to the beach to just hang out for awhile. And he knew exactly which side that he and Anita didn't go over during their patrols. Might as well take his day off to spend some time in the sun and surf, especially with the possibility of the island pulling its climate shift trick as the holidays came closer.
After stopping to get himself a sandwich and to tuck a small stack of comics under his arm, he walked out of the Compound, intent on getting down to the beach. There was no reason to be in any hurry, but the slight energy that came from purposefully slacking off made him a bit more quick in his step.
