I do consumer behavior in retail bank. I understand about distribution (direct mail). I also know a bit about how mass consumer market operates. I learnt not to base my judgement about consumers on my own experience/example, that can be highly non-representative. However it also does not mean I deny my own experience to influence my thinking. I will always state when I am talking out of intuition (it will be called IMBO - in my biased opinion) and when out of knowledge. Anything imbo can be confirmed (or denyed) doing simple internet based research.
I also aplogize if I state obvious things. I do not mind reading in russian at all, I just type very slow.
-If somebody wants to start a company - it makes sense this person knows or is prepared to do at least something that can be relevant. You can find professionals to do any type of work required for the operation, but than what is your role? It does not necessarily have to be the role related to day-to-day operation, it can be a role related to fundraizing or business planning - but at the end of the day the person needs to do something in his company.
It is very correct that the product compeltely depends on the market and if it is the type of clothing you sell through catalog - it is a mass product that has nothing to do with model exibits etc. Also I doubt how much catalog clothing is about clothing - imbo it is about distribution chain. The company that sells clothing via catalog is not in the business of makinf clothing, it buys clothing from somebody else. It is in the business of direct mail and inventory management. Think about store front. When you go to gap - who makes their clothing?
For the clothing - you need to create prototypes, keeping specific audience in mind. I will write about the audience below. It is not a problem to find professional designer who will create prototypes. If you are serios I know a person who has her own line , although those are ‘boutiki ‘ clothing for children, she produces in India and goes there by herself. Selling through catalog is MASS MARKET (even if you are niche player, i.e produce for specific audience) - you still need to make sure that economics of mass market takes place. Economics of mass market is very simple: you produce cheap, carry relatively low margin and sell it to many people. Everything is relevant, of course, and there is a range that exists within catalog business. But still. It is also because a lot of costs you are fixed.
Steps a) you need to hire designer only once and make samples, and I know nothing about it. But I do not think you will have any issue finding designer to work on your idea. You are not producing versachi fashion - you are producing mass market that will go to at least hundred thousand of people. The main problem of this desugner is to find materials that will allow mass production (cheap) and yet not to affect the samples too much. I believe it is more than designer - it is buyer, etc. bust I know nothing about it. b) you need to make a catalog - there is no problem to do some googling and find companies that produce catalogs. You need to make a choice whether you want models (more $) or just clothing. It sells better on models (imbo) - the more upscale the product is - the more you need models. I have some experience with direct mail agencies , but mosttly with very established ones that work for corporations - I do not think you need somebody like that (also making catalogs is not their main business). c) You need to hire print shop to print you catalogs. You do not do it yourselve. Again, simple research online will answer your questions. d) You need to manufacture the clothing items. Again, know nothing about it… but obviously production is in china or india or smth like that. e) You need to hire wairehouse and stock x month of inventory in it. You put your warehouse in god fortgotten place in US.
