Like
others before me, I too would like to mend my ways and setup a real backup solution. For this purpose, I've requisitioned a
NAS that will soon have RAID-5. Now, I just need a way of getting the data from my computer to it.
Things I'd like:
- Backup the whole hard drive (perhaps with folder exclusion), ideally also the windows registry and system stuff like the Windows "trash can".
- I want the backup stored in a way where I can actually see the individual files on the NAS (i.e. not is some giant proprietary .bkp file that I need to actually restore to my system in order to use any part of)
- Something that's fairly "fire-and-forget". It should look for changes and back those up without me having to intervene.
- Nice to haves: Encrypted (transmission and drive itself), Versioning
- I'm imminently more likely to try something that's free, but if you have a really good solution that costs money, I'm open to the idea.
catbird's suggestion of
CrashPlan looks pretty promising. Anyone else?
