Seducing Sam Winchester is an exercise in patience.

He’s the past the point of caring what happens to him, past the point of actually wanting to live. He’s given up on the ‘right’ way of doing things, which is good news for her, but they aren’t out of the woods yet. There are lines that he still won’t cross, but she’s slowly breaking down each of them, wedging her way more firmly into the spot Dean had left behind. She can’t be Dean, and she knows that, but she can do things that Dean can’t, and that gives her a bit of leverage. She can get in close, get under his skin, and maybe, maybe just get him to trust her.

She wants him to let go, to give in to that part of him that she knows is there. She’s seeing him at his ugliest which means that there doesn’t have to be any secrets. Sam doesn’t have to hide behind the façade of the person who’s normal, mostly because he isn’t. Sam’s extraordinary in so many ways, and Ruby just needs to get him to see it. He’s special. He’s the only one who can do what she needs him to do, and all she wants to do is prove it to him.

Sam still insists that he is normal. He wants to use what he can do to take out Lilith, but there are still those lines in the sand. They’re so easy to erase, but only if he wants to. Only if he’s willing to take it. Ruby tries to lure him to the other side. She pushes his limits, tries to get him to take for himself instead of taking what he’s given, but that can only get her so far without his help. Sam has to want what she wants. He has to need what she needs.

There’s a small part of her that knows that he’ll never want what she wants. He won’t want Lucifer to return to the world he was banished from. But if, for a moment, she can delude herself into hoping, she’s going to take it. What she does know is that every time Sam feels lonely, she’s the one he reaches for, to take charge and take away some of his choice for a little while.

Everything changes once he stops fighting himself.

He pulls those demons in the little girl’s house, and she can feel his drive and determination go through the roof. The doubt is gone. The hesitation is gone. He barely lets them get in the door before he’s throwing her down on the bed, looking to celebrate all that he feels he’s accomplished. He’s not ready, not even close to ready, but it’s the victory that’s going to push him forward, and get him to where she needs to take them.

His tongue swipes against her jugular, and there’s a part of her that wants him to just bite down and drink his fill, but she knows he’s not ready for that yet. There are still lines in the sand that she hasn’t swiped away but she’s getting there. There are a few less than there were a few weeks ago, and in the end, that’s more progress than anything else.
