Summary: Bela wasn’t anticipating three things: one) Parker had an insatiable appreciation for the holiday, one that she never bothered to convey to Bela-or at least in an obvious way. Two) she had flown in to New York from Boston to see her, and broke into her apartment to boot. And finally three) that Parker had an incredible knack of going all out.

Bela had just spent the entirety of her Christmas Eve digging around in the bilge of a retired air craft carrier, looking for a set of dog tags that supposedly had the ability to render the wearer the perfect shot, but if they lost them, they usually became the victim of some kind of tragic misfire. There was an element of danger, as in all of the things she did, but she didn’t trust anyone enough to handle this and not screw her over. This was something personal. She needed to do this for herself.
Bela didn’t really care much for Christmas. It was a sweet holiday, but she never had anyone to celebrate with, and she wasn’t going to force them into it. Sometimes she would celebrate with Larry, but she didn’t like to impose. That was his time with Sam. She wasn’t going to get in the middle of that. Besides, it was after sunset by the time she emerged from the ship, and she was covered in slime and grit, and just wanted to go home, shower, and go to sleep. Hopefully that wasn’t too much to ask.
Bela wasn’t anticipating three things: one) Parker had an insatiable appreciation for the holiday, one that she never bothered to convey to Bela-or at least in an obvious way. Two) she had flown in to New York from Boston to see her, and broke into her apartment to boot. And finally three) that Parker had an incredible knack of going all out. If Bela had been prepared for any of these elements, she might not have dropped the object that she had spent all day searching for in pure shock alone.
Bela didn’t expect Parker to be a Christmas person, because as far as she knew, the team that she worked with in Boston was part of the first group of people that she really considered family. She didn’t make the connection that you could celebrate a holiday without family, mostly because she never could. It was an issue that never came up between them, because Bela never thought to ask, but now that she was standing in her living room, she was wishing that she had. It might have saved her a lot of surprise.
“Merry Christmas!” Parker said, with such a gleeful smile on her face, that Bela couldn’t help but return it. It started to fade, however, when Parker saw the state that her lover was in. “What happened to you?”
“I was working,” she said softly, starting to spin as she looked around the room. There were lights everywhere, a tree by her kitchen that was covered in some of the most beautiful jewelry she had ever seen, and Parker, standing there wearing antlers, bright red and green clothing, and looking as though this was the happiest day of her whole year. It was childish, but incredibly endearing. “What is all this?”
“Christmas!” Parker said excitedly. “I got here and you had no decorations up at all. I didn’t think you were a Grinch like Nate and probably just got busy so I decided to fix up your place for you. What do you think?”
“It’s … amazing,” Bela supplied, for lack of a better word. “Where did you get it all?” Parker gave her a look that indicated she didn’t want to know, and Bela shook her head. “Never mind. What are you even doing here, Parker?”
“It’s Christmas,” she replied. “They say that people shouldn’t be alone, and since we’re people … ” She shrugged. She started to get a look as though she had done something wrong, and Bela shook her head before making her way closer and giving her a brief kiss.
“It’s beautiful, love,” she said softly. “Let me go get cleaned up, and we’ll talk, yeah?”
“Okay,” Parker said with a grin, before heading back to flop down on the couch.
By the time the two of them said good night that night, Bela had had too many Christmas cookies, tried to tell Parker that she wasn’t sure if Santa was coming and failed to convince her otherwise, and had fallen asleep on the couch waiting for him to arrive, but she felt it was very safe to say that this was one of the best Christmases that she had had in a long time.
And hopefully, it wouldn’t be the last one.
