“See, this? This is why I don’t double date.” Faith shifted uncomfortably from where she was tied back to back with Samantha. “Hell, this is why I don’t date at all.”

The evening had started out innocent enough, or at least on Faith’s part. She was headed out to a bar to do her usual, and she happened to run into Flack and the happy couple on the way to the diner not too far from the bar. She didn’t expect to be invited along-she and Flack weren’t even a thing-but Spike sent her a look that he said he didn’t want to be the unwanted special guest in the Flack Show, and Flack was giving her a look that said he didn’t want to be the third wheel. Why they had picked Faith was anybody’s guess, but at this point, it was probably a good thing that she didn’t have anything better to do that night.

If she had known that by ten the next morning, she would wind up being the main course, she would have stayed home.

She glanced over at the door, waiting for a moment to see if the vamps who had them hogtied would be returning, while she tried as best as she could to push her wrists apart and break the ropes. Whoever these fangs were, they were smart. Her arms had barely enough room to move, let alone the leverage to break them with Slayer strength alone. She grit her teeth as she worked her arms, trying to get any bit of wiggle room she could.

“Kinky. I’m not too big on bondage, but hey-whatever gets ‘em hot.”

“Really? We could die right now, and you’re cracking jokes.” Samantha sounded scared. Faith didn’t really blame her. She didn’t ask to get thrust into this world, but she’d been good for Spike. Hell, Faith would even go so far as to say she liked her. But that was neither here nor there, right now. Right now, she just wanted to get everyone home with their souls intact.

“Just tryin’ to lighten the mood, Sam. Relax.” She wiggled her wrists again. “I’ll get us out of this. We aren’t dead yet.”

She felt Sam nod against the back of her head, before it turned, as though she was looking at something. “You’re a Slayer, right? Aren’t you supposed to be super-strong or something?”

“Yeah, but super strength only does you so much good when you can’t move.” Her eyes glanced around, looking for any sign of the other two members of their party. “Can you see your boys?”

Samantha was quiet for a moment, before Faith felt her nod. “Yeah. My side of the room. They’re both still out, though.”

“Okay. Okay, we can do this. I just gotta get loose.” But she wasn’t going to be able to do that all on her own. She was going to have to get Samantha to help her, and that involved getting her trust. Faith wasn’t so good at that. Running point on a hunting mission, sure-comforting the victim was usually B’s gig. She took a breath, before turning back so that she could almost see Samantha’s face from where she was sitting. “I need your help.”

There was a moment, and Faith really started to pray that Samantha wasn’t going to wimp out on her now, but the girl just nodded. “What do you need me to do?”

“Okay. Our arms are tied together, but there’s a knife on the back of my belt. With the angle, I can’t get it. Think you can?”

There was some fumbling on both their parts, but eventually Samantha was pushing the hilt of the knife into Faith’s hands, and she felt the scratch of the edge of the blade pushing up so that it was at the right angle to wear against the rope. Her hands moved slowly, trying not to stab herself too much in the process, but eventually, she managed to break just enough that she could get the leverage she needed to snap the ropes. The second that was done, she was on her feet, breaking a leg off one of the chairs and heading for the door.

“You check on Spike and your brother, I’ll take care of our distinguished hosts.”

When Faith came back into the room, she was covered in dust and a bit of blood, but she was in one piece. Tonight was supposed to be her night off, but apparently, for a Slayer, such a thing didn’t exist. She really was just planning on making sure that everyone was okay, then heading home to sleep it off. She wasn’t supposed to have been out with them anyway. They probably just wanted to get out of here and get home themselves.

“Everybody alright?” she asked as she made her way in, her hand coming up to brush at the back of her mouth with her wrist. “No major injuries that we should be aware of?”

“No, we’re good,” Spike nodded. “Thanks, Faith.”

“Hey, no big,” she shrugged. “It’s what I do.” She took a breath, before starting to backtrack. “Well, I’m gonna bail and let you guys salvage your evening.”

“Faith, wait-”

She held up a hand to stop Flack before he even got started. “Don’t even sweat it, Blue. I was crashing the party anyway.”

She didn’t give him time to respond. She didn’t want his gratitude. Hell, she didn’t even want to be here in the first place, so she turned on her heel and just started walking. She was out the door and around the corner when she heard his footsteps behind her, and she turned to face him again. Flack just looked at her for a moment, and she sighed before running a hand through her hair.

“What part of ‘don’t sweat it’ wasn’t quite-”

She’s cut off when his hands land on her waist, and he leaned in to kiss her softly. Not the needy way he usually did when he wanted something, but with-gratitude, almost. She kissed him back, but other than that didn’t respond, just waiting until he pulled back before looking at her again. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome,” she said lamely. He nodded, before turning and heading back to his sister and her boyfriend. Faith watched him go, before shaking her head and starting to head back to her place again.

“Getting attached to a cop,” she muttered as she turned the next corner. “Yeah, that’s exactly what you need.”
