Elle jerked awake at the sound of knuckles rapping against the window she had let her head rest against, first up then forward, leading to her cracking her forehead against the window. She could hear him laughing at her through the window before slowly opening the door. She didn’t know how she had enough sense to not tumble out of the car when he did, but she didn’t. She probably should have considered that a gift enough.

“Morning, Sunshine,” he said with a smile. “How’d you sleep?”

“Terrible,” she sighed, rubbing her eyes with one hand as she peered out the door. “How do you sleep in the car all the time?”

He smirked a bit at that, before handing her a cup of coffee. “Tell you what. Next time we wind up in a town, I’ll let you pick the living accommodations.”

She raised an eyebrow at that. “Anywhere I want? Even if that means I pay?”

“If that’s what makes you happy,” he sighed, before moving around to the front of the car, pushing up so that he was sitting on the hood.

“It makes me very happy,” Elle paused long enough to get her shoes back on her feet, before moving around to join him, settling onto the hood. It took her a moment to look out over the area and figure out what it was, but instead of stating it, she just looked at him, confused. “Where are we?”

“Stalls Cemetery,” he sighed, taking a sip of his coffee. “Outside Lawrence, Kansas.”

“Charming,” she quipped. “Why are we here? Is there a ghost that needs busting?” She still wasn’t up on all the answers to what exactly it was Dean hunted, but she was picking things up, slowly but surely. The only times they went to a graveyard is for ghosts or zombies, and the former was the more common option. Dean, however, shook his head as he let his elbows rest on his knees.

“Nope.”

She waited for a moment, to see if he’d answer, before reaching over and placing a hand on his shoulder. “Dean?”

“It’s the anniversary. A year ago, my brother saved the world, and all he got for it was a trip to the pit.”

Dean didn’t talk about Sam much, and Elle knew better than to push. When he brought it up, though, she couldn’t help but inch closer, slipping her arm through his. “What happened?” He told her the story, and she considered it quietly. “He did a good thing.”

“Yeah. Just wish that I could fix what it got him.”

“You can’t save everyone,” she said softly, giving his arm a squeeze. “But you can save some people.” She’s quiet for a moment, before looking up at him again. “You saved me.”

He glanced back to give her a smile, before hold up his cup of coffee. “To Sam. For saving everybody.”

She nodded, before tapping her cup against his. “To Sam.”
