LA was going to hell in a hand basket faster than a race car could go zero to sixty, and it really shouldn’t have surprised Gwen that Angel was somehow right in the middle of it, but it did.
Gwen Raiden usually wasn’t one to go around saving the day-she usually left that to Angel and his crew and only went for heroics when it would get her out of trouble-but this wasn’t about being a hero. This was about survival. She and Elle had been on the streets ever since the Senior Partners had caught wind of what Angel was after, and to be honest, Gwen was finding the whole situation a little comforting. She had been worried about which the road the big lug of a vampire was on, not that she’d ever admit it, and to have the bad guys pitching this big a fit? He must have been doing something really, really right.
Right now, the two girls were just trying to find him. The Hyperion was gone, Wolfram and Hart was obliterated-Gwen was running out of places to look, and she could tell that Elle was starting to panic. The girl had grown up in a world of freaks, that much was true, but Gwen’s LA was a little freakier than whatever Elle had been raised in back in upstate New York. And by a little she meant a lot. They were just rounding a corner to take shelter from a group of vamps just asking to get fried when Elle stopped dead in her tracks and just stared.
“Is that a dragon?”
Gwen turned to see what she was looking at, and that was when she saw it. Angel. Standing astride a dragon, that he had obviously just slain, and looking far too pleased with himself. Angel would definitely be the kind of guy who would have been running around with Beowulf trying to slay the Grendel and then getting his ass kicked by Mama. But she wasn’t going to rub that in. Much.
“You’re just showing off,” she shouted over at him, and Angel hopped down off the top of the dragon, heading towards her.
“Gwen. Didn’t know you were in town.”
“A Great Good goes to the side of the Big Bads, and a girl slows down to pay attention,” Gwen drawled, before tipping her head back towards the blond behind her. “That’s Elle. She’s with me.” The possessiveness was necessary-she had so few things that were. “Elle, this is Angel.”
“Angel’s the vampire, right?” Elle said cautiously, edging her way closer.
“Right,” she said with a nod, before reaching behind her to for the shorter girl’s hand. There were sparks, always were when they touched each other, but not enough for Angel to notice that she wasn’t wearing LISA. She moved closer and raised an eyebrow. “Where’s the rest of the merry band?”
Angel’s eyes went distant, and he glanced away. “Spike and Illyria are around here somewhere. Gunn and Wes are dead. Not much left after that.”
Gunn’s death hit her a little harder than she thought it would. She knew she should have seen it coming, but for right now, she knew she just needed to push it away and keep going. “Alright. How can we help?”
“Look, Gwen, I know you’re useful but-”
“Guys!” Elle’s voice came from over her shoulder, and both her and Angel turned just in time to see Elle throw an arc to fry a vampire that had just come around the corner. The vamp went up in flames, and Elle backed closer to Gwen, her hand tightening in hers.
Angel blinked for a moment before responding. “I can see why you like her. Okay-we’re hooking up with Spike in a building not too far from here. You’ve got my back if I got yours?”
“You got it.”
Angel moved to the mouth of the alley, leaving the two of them alone for a moment. Gwen gave Elle’s hand a squeeze, before turning back to her. “You okay, Sunshine?”
“Not really,” Elle fired back. “This is a little weirder than usual for LA.”
“Just stick with me, alright? I’m not going to let anything happen to you.” Elle looked away for a moment and Gwen gave her a bit of a shock. “Hey.” Elle jumped and turned to face her again. “You trust me don’t you?”
The blond swallows for a moment, before nodding. “Yeah. I do.”
“Good.” Gwen leaned in to kiss her gently, before giving her a small smile. “I’ll keep us safe, okay?”
Elle straightened a bit, before nodding. “Okay.”
“This is a really touching moment, but can we move please.” Gwen gave Angel a look, and a bit of a shock as they moved forward, heading towards the mouth of the alley.
“Sure thing. Lead the way, Beowulf.”
