Summary: Flack is heading to lunch and Lindsay interrupts on the way.
Author’s Note: Written for myherodrowning who gave me Flack/Lindsay -> Narcissus for this meme and it exploded. I haven’t written these two in a long time. Also, obviously, this is completely AU to the last few seasons of CSI:NY as Lindsay here was never with Danny.
Disclaimer: I do not own. They belong to Zukier and CBS. I’m just borrowing and will put them all back where I found them.

Flack was going to lunch. He and Lindsay had managed to catch a fairly easy case this morning-for all intents and purposes it was looking like an unfortunate accident, and he was more than willing to wait for the evidence to check out so that it could be confirmed as such. That didn’t mean, however, that he couldn’t head to the new deli down the street and see if it was worth not driving across town to his favorite place.

Or at least that was his intention. He was just under five feet from the elevator when he heard the voice and the pound of footsteps coming from behind him.

“Flack!”

He glanced around and saw Lindsay jogging towards him, a certain smile on her face that was hoping he wouldn’t see. Not that he didn’t like to see her smile, but this particular smile came with evidence, a story, and another case being added to his caseload. He swallowed down the discomfort for now, though, returning the smile, before nodding in her direction.

“What’s up, Monroe?”

“I think I’ve got something.”

He let out a slow breath and glanced down at his watch. “Can it wait until after lunch?” She gave him a bit of a look at that, and he gave her an innocent smile. “Can it be discussed over lunch?” She hesitated a little at that, and he moved closer. “C’mon. I’ve barely seen you all week. I don’t think one little lunch will hurt if we’re discussing the case.”

She took a deep breath, before nodding and reaching for the buttons on her lab coat. “Let me just get ready to go.”

He grinned. “I’ll be here.”

He managed to put off talking about the case for at least a half an hour. It wasn’t as though they didn’t see each other at home, but home was mostly for eating and sleeping. He hadn’t had the chance to just talk to her about things that weren’t work, and that was nice. He heard her laugh for what seemed like the first time in ages, and that made him having to con her into this completely worth it. He could have possibly made it longer, but she beat him to the punch, lacing her fingers under her chin as she placed her sandwich down.

“Can we talk about the case now?”

Flack sighed heavily, before taking another bite of his sandwich. “Alright. What’d you find?”

“The flower that was left on the vic’s body-”

“The daffodil.”

“Not just any daffodil,” she said with a smirk. “Narcissus poeticus. The poet’s daffodil.”

“Poets have daffodils?”

“There’s more to it than that. Ready to pay attention?”

Her tone was mostly teasing, because she knew how he felt about her stories. He never would tell her that he always paid attention to every word she said, but he had to keep up appearances. No matter what she said, she always got around to the point eventually. He nodded, before leaning back in his seat a bit.

“Lay it on me.”

“Well. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a man who thought he was the most important man in the world. He was so obsessed with his own beauty that when he saw his reflection in the water, he fell in love with it, and refused to leave it’s side until he could take his reflection with him. He died on that riverbank and where he died sprung up a flower-the narcissus flower-that is always looking at it’s reflection, a reminder of why you shouldn’t be too caught up in yourself.”

“So what does this have to do with our case? Our vic was found in a flower shop, Linds, there were flowers everywhere.”

“I checked the inventory. The flower shop has never carried that flower before. And you talked to the woman who said that Evanson was a pretentious creep,” she crossed her arms in front of her chest. “I think it was a sign.”

Flack sighed, before shaking his head. “You said it yourself, the science doesn’t match up like he was pushed.”

“Doesn’t mean the perp didn’t do it. We could just be dealing with a very smart perp.”

“Well, let’s see what Sid comes back with on the autopsy before we go jumping to any conclusions, alright?” he replied, shifting so that he was leaning closer to her. “I want to actually spend some quality time with you without you holding a case over my head.”

She smiled at him, before leaning in and kissing him softly. “I’ll only follow the evidence. I promise.”

“Good,” he nodded.

“Good,” she sighed, before glancing at her watch. “And I gotta run-I have an appointment with Hammerback.”

“Call me if you need me to go track down our flower boy.”

“I will,” she said with a nod as she got out of her seat, before leaning in to kiss him one last time. “Thanks for lunch.”

“Anytime.”
