There was nothing about this situation that gave Buffy the warm and fuzzies.

There was nothing about the First that was warm and fuzzy. The First was manipulative. Deceitful. The First had been one of the worst opponents she had ever faced, and she was not looking forward to doing it again, especially not in the middle of another Apocalypse-or, to be more specific, an Apocalypse that the First wasn’t trying to start. Lucifer plus the First? Meant that this was turning into a really bad situation, really quickly, and there was a nagging feeling in the pit of Buffy’s stomach that they might not be able to beat this one.

They had to beat it, but at the same time, she wasn’t sure she could.

Her flight from Scotland got in around eight PM, New York time, and she was jet lagged and sore, but she knew that they didn’t have time to worry about that. She needed to get to Lindsay, get to Faith-find the answers before more people died. The Apocalypse was already going to be a bloodbath. They didn’t need to lose any more people because of this mess.

Lindsay was already waiting at the terminal with her car, flagging her down as she exited the airport. If there had been better circumstances, she probably would have greeted the Watcher with a hug or some other friendly form of affection, but right now this was all business. The friend-like stuff would have to come later. She slid into the passenger’s side of the car after placing the bag with her scythe and other assorted weapons in the back seat before turning back to look at her.

“Have you heard from Wesley since he got out of jail?”

“Nothing,” Lindsay replied, pulling out of the parking lot and into the street. “I gave him my card with my number on it, but whatever situation they were escaping to must have taken up their time.”

“Giles tried calling Faith, but she isn’t answering. In fact, she hasn’t answered a call since she got this assignment with the Winchesters, which does not leave me with a good feeling about the whole thing.” She paused for a minute, before turning back to Lindsay again. “How did they get out of jail anyway?”

“Probably the Winchesters’ angel,” Lindsay sighed. “I saw a tall guy in a trench coat that I didn’t recognize with him before they disappeared from the station.”

Buffy nodded quietly for a moment, processing the information and trying to make it all make sense. Faith losing contact, that was a given. She was half-tempted to put a call into Xander, have him track the GPS signal in Faith’s phone, but she didn’t. Not yet. Not until she had a gauge of how things really were. But there was something about this that was really nagging her: “How’d they get caught?”

“There was a girl, at the scene, named Samantha,” Lindsay replied. “Claimed she had been kidnapped-not by them, but by something else. Her and her boyfriend-”

“Spike.”

“Yeah,” Lindsay frowned. “How’d you know?”

“Me and Spike go way back,” Buffy sighed. “Should have figured that he’d be mixed up in something like this.” She reached for her phone, sorting through it until she found the address she was looking for. “I think I know just where to find them.”

Spike was on his way out as Buffy was arriving, bag slung over his shoulder like he was moving out. She climbed out of the car, shut the door behind her and crossed her arms in front of her chest, blocking him from moving forward. “Spike.”

“Buffy. What a surprise.” He dropped his bag down to the sidewalk, looking her in the eye. “Been a long time.”

“Where’s Faith?”

“Yes, Spike, it’s been a very long time, how’re you? Oh, not bad. Same ol’, same ol’. How about you, Buffy? Oh, I’m fine. Just poppin’ in for a visit to save the world.”

“Spike, later. We don’t have the time now. The First is back, remember?”

“Yeah, I’m aware-he was here.”

“What?”

“Apparently, he conned Dean Winchester out of the safe zone and took his place. But they got him back, and they’re headed over there now. I’m on my way to see my girl, make sure she’s in one piece.”

“The Winchesters have died before?”

“Not my story to tell, love,” Spike replied, before moving to pick up his bag again.

“When’d they leave?”

“I’ll text you the address and warn Faith that you’re coming. Don’t take it personally if they’re gone by the time you get there.”

“Well, great. She’ll answer your calls, but she won’t answer mine?”

“This is a tough situation, pet. I wouldn’t take it too personally.” Spike sighed softly. “I’m sure she’ll be able to explain when ya finally catch up with ‘er.”

“Yeah, sure she will,” Buffy sighed before turning and heading back to the car. “Thanks for the info, Spike.” Spike gave her a wave, and she closed the door, before hearing Lindsay’s voice behind her.

“This isn’t good, is it?”

Buffy just sighed quietly, before shaking her head. “Nothing about this is good.”
