Summary: There’s some things you just can’t change, no matter how hard you try.
Author's Note: Okay. So. Really long hiatuses on Heroes? Not fun. So I’m playing around with what’s canon for my series a bit. Incident with Sylar still happened when it did, but Nathan wasn’t shot on the same day, pushing that timeline back a bit so that I can still play with things. It’s an AU. I can play with canon how I want to.
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters of Supernatural or Heroes. They're owned by the CW and NBC. However, any and all original characters are mine, so please do not use them without my permission.
“We’re going after Lilith.”
Elle spun around on her heels, looking over at him with a nod. “When do we leave?”
Dean’s eyes never left hers. They weren’t happy eyes, and at first she chalked that to the fact that they were coming down to the wire in the terms of his deal, but the longer it took him to answer her question, the more she knew that there was something else that he wasn’t telling her. She met his stare, accusation rising in her eyes until he looked away from her, eyes angled towards the ground.
“You’re not coming.”
She was expecting it, yet the words still hit her like a smack in the face. After everything she’d been through with these boys, after all the times they saved her-they were all she had. She couldn’t have her life both ways. She couldn’t have the Company and the Winchesters at the same time. She chose them, and they were shutting her out, and she didn’t understand why.
“Dean, why-”
“Because it’s too dangerous,” he replied. “It’s bad enough Sam’s coming with me on this, I’m not going to risk your life too.”
Elle grit her teeth slightly, trying to find a response that wouldn’t sound childish or ungrateful. Because she understood the reason why he was doing this. She knew he was really just trying to protect her, as oppose to her father who would bench her under the guise of trying to protect her, but really meant that she was just causing trouble. Dean was doing this because he cared, but in her mind, he’d picked a really bad time to try and show it.
“I’m not exactly helpless. I know how to fight back.”
“Too risky,” he said, shaking his head. “You’ll fry a few of them, but there’ll be too many. I-I don’t-I can’t risk it.”
“Dean, please.” She was getting desperate. They couldn’t abandon her, not now. Not after everything they had been through. “I can help, I promise.”
“If you got killed because of me-”
“I won’t,” she said, moving closer to him and taking his hands in hers. “I won’t get hurt; I can protect myself.” The pleading in her voice probably translated to her begging not to be left alone again. It was a silent fear hanging in the back of her mind. If they went and they succeeded, who said they were going to come back for her? She couldn’t handle being abandoned or ignored. Not again.
“Elle, please,” he said softly, starting to pull away from her, but she wouldn’t loosen the grip on his hands. “I don’t want anyone else dying because o’ me.”
“I’m not going to-”
“There’s a pretty high chance that you will,” he said with a growl, staring her down. “And that’s good enough for me, so no, Elle. You’re not going.”
“What are you gonna do?” Elle said, matching the anger in her voice with some of her own. She wasn’t backing down that easily. There were few things she was scared of and Dean Winchester wasn’t one of them. “Just gonna tie me up and leave me here.”
“I won’t if I don’t have to.”
“Damnit, Dean,” she glared, her voice starting to crack. She tried to stuff it back, focus on the anger rather than the fact that her heart was breaking and he didn’t seem to care, but the sadness was winning out. She was angry-hell, she was furious-but he was leaving her. And that was smashing her to pieces. She collapsed backwards against the bed, her back hitting the footboard and just letting herself sink to the floor, the bars of the foot of the bed digging into her back, trying to find a way to get her head to stop spinning. “Don’t leave me.”
“Listen to me,” Dean said as he crouched down next to her, looking her dead in the eye. “If somehow this works and I don’t die tomorrow? I’m coming right back here. I’m not leaving you.”
“Promise?” she asked weakly, looking up at him as she started to deflate, the fight leaving her again. She had no reason not to believe him, but this situation didn’t feel right in the pit of her stomach. She didn’t want to lose him either way. And he hadn’t broken a promise to her yet.
“Promise,” he murmured, before leaning in to kiss her softly. One hand slid up to cup the side of her face as he pulled her in closer, deepening the kiss almost as though it was the last one he was ever going to have. She leaned into the kiss as well, one hand landing on his arm to pull him closer, until she felt the click of metal against her skin, and pulled away with a shot glancing down to see the handcuffs on her wrist, linking her to the footboard, and then the look of betrayal washed over her face.
“I’m sorry,” Dean said softly, all the hurt apparent on his face, before he pushed himself off and moved rather quickly towards the door. Which was actually a rather smart move, because he’d barely ducked around the corner as an arc flew from the room, striking the wall on the far side of the hallway. After that Elle just crumpled, knowing that there was nothing else she could really do.
He was leaving her here. And until she figured a way out, there was nothing she could do about it.
***
By the time Elle arrived in Indiana, it was over.
There were bodies in the streets and people with emotions that ranged from stunned to scared bringing themselves to their feet. Some people didn’t get up, necks bent at irregular angles, or bleeding from stab wounds in their backs or chests. It was a mess, but Elle wasn’t watching. She was making her way slowly through the front yard to the house that seemed to be the epicenter of the whole mess, treading lightly as to not disturb anything and slipping quietly in through the front door.
She didn’t even make it to the living room before Bobby was in front of her, placing his hands on her shoulders and guiding her back out again. “You don’t want to go in there, Elle. Trust me.”
“Why?” she frowned, eyes suddenly going wide with worry. “Bobby, what happened?” Bobby didn’t say anything, and Elle realized what happened. She crumpled slightly as the news hit her, her body curling in on itself.
“I’m sorry, kid. Really, I am,” he said with a sigh, keeping a hand on her shoulder as she sat down on one of the chairs in the hallway, trying to get herself to stop shaking. This wasn’t how things were supposed to end. Dean was supposed to be saved, somehow, someway.
And now, she really did have nothing.
Sam probably wouldn’t want her anywhere near him. She would be a reminder he wouldn’t need about what he had lost, so there was no point of even asking if she should. She had lost the closest thing she had to family all over again, and there was nowhere for her to go. She didn’t know where Adam was-he’d whisked Bela away once the time for her deal had come due, and she hadn’t heard from him since. The only person she had left was in Hartsdale, and while he was the last person in the world she wanted to call, she really didn’t see herself as having many other options.
She pushed herself up from the chair and made her way back out to the street. She sat herself down on the curb and pulled open her phone. All it took was a moment for the phone to ring before the person on the other end picked up.
“Daddy? Can you come get me?”
