“Can I ask you something?” Christina asked before taking a pull on her beer.
She and Danny were sitting on the beach outside the city, watching the stars above them. It had been pretty gorgeous for fall in the city, and the conditions were just perfect for sitting on the beach like this. Just sitting and watching. Reminded her of home sometimes. So when Danny had offered to drive out, she said she’d buy the beer for once.
“Shoot,” he replied.
“What is the deal with you and Peluso?” she asked. He hesitated for a minute and then started to speak, but she cut him off, “And don’t say it’s a lawyer thing, because I’m a lawyer too.”
“Yeah, but with you it’s easier to forget that,” he said with a smirk.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” she frowned.
“You’re too nice to be a lawyer, Finn.”
“Thanks a lot,” she said, starting to move away from him, and he grabbed her arm with a laugh to pull her back.
“I meant it as a compliment,” he said, “Get back here.”
“No,” Christina replied, yanking her arm out of his grasp, “I didn’t come out here to get abused like this.”
“Abused? I paid you a damn compliment,” he said, watching her as she started to walk back towards the car, “Fine! Go! Hope you like walkin’ cuz it’s a long way back to the city.”
Christina hesitated for a moment, then turned around and walked back, “OK, you win.”
He laughed, and shook his head, “What I meant was, I got to know you before I found out you were one of them. When we hang out like this, I like to pretend that I still don’t know.”
“I see,” she nodded, “You’re pretty good at evading a question.”
“It’s a gift,” he said, and she shook her head.
“C’mon, Danny. Tell me.”
He hesitated again, and she waited, knowing that he wouldn’t tell her if she pushed him. “Me and him-we just butt heads I guess. My mother always used to tell me that if two people were too much alike that they would never get along. Said that was why I always fought with my dad; that must be what it is with me and Peluso.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Huh,” she sighed, “That’s funny.”
“What’s funny?”
“I never really thought of it that way. You and Peluso being alike.”
“Really?”
“Yeah,” she nodded.
“Why do you say that?”
“Well-Peluso’s a lot-smoother.”
Danny was taken aback a bit, “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Not in the player sense, in a general sense he’s more-pulled together-more polished. You’re rougher around the edges.”
“Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”
“Well, I happen to like rougher edges,” she said, giving him a smile, “Why do you think I’m sitting out here with you?”
“Well-Peluso’s got a girlfriend now-”
“Even so,” she cut him off, “I’d be here.”
“I appreciate that, Christina,” he said, “I really do.”
“You’re welcome,” she sighed, before turning back to look over her shoulder at the city lights behind her. “We should probably be returning from whence we came, shouldn’t we?”
“Yeah, we probably should,” Danny replied, before alternating glances between the city and the shore line, “But I think we could stand to stay out here for a little while longer, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” she nodded, “I think we could.” Danny gave her a grin before clinking the top of his beer to hers, and then turning back out to face the shore again.
