baseball and bud selig's asshatery

Okay, so everyone knows I'm a baseball fan, right? I love my Tigers. Well, here is my mini-baseball rant about how much of a giant douchebag Bud Selig is (he's the commissioner... the head guy in baseball land). I get to post it in LJ because I've only got a couple of friends who enjoy baseball, and one doesn't have a phone and the other is too busy for words.

So Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron's home run record, right? Selig is in the stands when this happens, and if you watch his mouth the second the ball goes over the wall, he says "sonofabitch!" He scowls and refuses to stand up and acknowledge Bonds. He's the goddamned commissioner! He should be throwing a celebration, if for nothing other than putting his sport in the media! I understand the steroid controversy surrounding Bonds, this is nothing new. However, I bring up two points. Steroid use or not, you have to accept the fact that Bonds broke the record. You don't have to LIKE the guy or his personal choices to respect the fact that he did something major. Previous other players... steroid users and non users... haven't been this successful with the HR record. I'd also like to bring up how nobody really talks about Hank Aaron in the first place. I doubt that baseball had such strict testing rules fifty years ago, so how are people to know that Aaron's record was or was not also tainted? Keep in mind that alot of drugs that are now controlled substances were given out freely then, before the long-term effects were really studied. Speed was given out at college campuses during exam time to better aid students' study efforts. Granted, speed isn't going to help your baseball skills, but it is a point to consider. Anyway, not that I'm a big supporter of Barry Bonds, but I respect the fact that he broke the record, and I think Bud Selig should do the same.

If you compare A-rod (Alex Rodriguez, one of the superstar hitters for the Yankees) to Bonds, you'll shit yourself. Personally, I hate the yankees. I love to hate them, I love to poke fun at Yankee fans when their team loses (because they've got some of the greatest players in baseball). But compaing A-rod right now to what Bonds' stats look like ten years ago (as Rodriguez is about ten years younger than Bonds), the Yankees star blows Bonds away in just about every category. Does this mean that the new Bonds record could be broken in less than ten years? Probably, barring any severe injuries to Rodriguez. I hate the team, but I respect the fact that he is a great player. And you know what, when he gets close to that record... the media will be beside themselves trying to burn the guy at the stake... there will be cries of steroid use, puppy kicking, and whatever else will make people hate him. People love to hate, people are skeptics and non-believers, and boy are we all stubborn. We don't like change, we like the records where they are, paying some sort of homage to baseball's past, where baseball was as american as apple pie, or some shit. Haters. They're all haters.

Another point to this argument... Jason Giambi, yet another star hitter for the Yankees just admitted to steroid use. ADMITTED. Giambi says YES I have a personal history with steroids. I say GEE I knew I hated your team for a reason. Bud Selig, captain asshat of baseball, does not dole out punishment. No fines, no suspensions, nothing. He pats the guy on the back because Giambi kissed his ass all the way to the court room. Selig would just as soon lynch Barry Bonds for possible steroid use... but refuses to administer any punishment to Giambi.

What a load o' shit.

Here's a chunk taken from the Toronto AP, via Yahoo:

'Selig said the league does not intend to hold an official celebration to honor Barry Bonds for breaking Hank Aaron's home run record. "I think my statement was appropriate and I don't have any future plans," he said. When Bonds broke the record, Selig issued a statement saying, "While the issues which have swirled around this record will continue to work themselves toward resolution, today is a day for congratulations on a truly remarkable achievement." Asked whether he was happy with the way the record fell, Selig responded: "Look, it's fine; it's over, and I think I was." '

Reading this tells me Selig has a serious dislike for Barry Bonds, considering what he says is that he refuses to celebrate the record-breaking event. The statement he issues is congratulatory... it being a"statement" makes me think some lackey wrote it in an attempt to make Selig not look like a total ass. I understand that if he supports Bonds and there is a factual statement of Yes I used steroids coming from Bonds, it makes Selig look like he supports steroid use. But he's being colder about it than the Queen of England during the media blitz of Diana's death.

Anyway, that's my baseball rant. There is plenty more to it, I'm just too hungry to keep elaborating. I hope my Tigers wreck the Yankees this weekend and next week. If they don't, I'll never live it down. Aaron Teitelbaum will be on my ass for a year about how his team beat my team. Hopefully Zumaya will be back for the series at Detroit. Yeah, buddy!!

XOXO
Kate
