Memes: Because I Have No LIfe

So I keep seeing these Harry Potter and Doctor Who 30 Day Memes, and I am a bored sheep. Without further ado...

HARRY POTTER

Day 1: Your Favorite Book

This is so difficult a question that I have actually been known to change the subject when it comes up in conversation. I think most mothers would have an easier time choosing a favorite child than I do answering this question. The more I think about it, the harder it gets, and my answer will probably change in an hour. But I'm going with my instinct on this one and saying...

I'm not involved in HP fandom enough [because it's ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING even if there are some really amazing people in there] beyond reading fic and occasionally lurking on Mugglenet or stumbling on some meta to know if this is a popular or unpopular opinion. I also don't know exactly why I'm choosing HBP over DH (which I absolutely adored even if it still makes me want to spend the rest of my life crying), PoA (Remus Lupin is the coolest professor ever. Don't even try to tell me he isn't.), or OotP. (Yes, I said OotP. Hate capslock!Harry all you want, people, I love that book.) Of course, once I get started on that train of thought, I'm reminded of how much I also love PS/SS, CoS, and GoF, though I can say with almost absolute certainty that GoF is not my favorite. That's really all I know for sure, because I love Harry Potter to an unhealthy degree.

Anyway.

I loved Half-Blood Prince. It was the first book I got at midnight (and read in a day), and--while GoF was the beginning of a sort of second era of HP, OotP was a HUGE turning point for Harry, and DH was the end--this was the end of an era. This was when, as Mark would say, SHIT GOT REAL.

This book was about horcruxes and Draco Malfoy and a mysterious potions book, but the most heartbreaking thing about HBP is that as much as Harry & Co. had already lost, as much as they had already learned, this book was still about kids. And it was never so obvious that were it not for Voldemort, these characters would be acting like any sixteen-year-olds: stressing over schoolwork (or ignoring it completely), laughing over a game of Exploding Snap with their friends, and paying a little too much attention to that dragon in their chests. (Erm, I have to admit the other thing I love about HBP is the ships. Although I don't pay them much attention outside of canon, I do like Harry/Ginny and Lupin/Tonks. But then there's Ron and Hermione, and they will NEVER EVER stop being my OTP. Ever. I loved them in this book so much it was ridiculous.)

The thing is, though, by the end of this book we have a Draco who is a Death Eater. We have three kids becoming Hogwarts drop-outs in order to save the world. And we've lost Dumbledore, the man who had the answers and made sure everything was okay. It wasn't that his death was shocking (though I certainly didn't expect Snape to kill him), but it made it very, very clear that Harry couldn't be a kid anymore. This was the end of Harry Potter as we knew it. And it was awesome.

That probably didn't make any sense or have any semblance of structure. Forgive me. It's very difficult for me to use actual words to describe my love for Harry Potter.

DOCTOR WHO

Day 1: Your Favorite Quote

I'm gonna go for the lulz here, because otherwise I won't be able to choose a quote.

"YOU ARE SUPERIOR IN ONLY ONE RESPECT."

"What is that?"

"YOU ARE BETTER AT DYING."
