Boxes
Silhouettes like buildings,
Uneven against the wall.
Lone skyscrapers in the desert,
On sand-colored carpet.
Walls
Newly painted backdrop for the story
Yet to unfold.
Thumbtacks would cause craters, so
Live in a blinding white desert with no reminders of the past.
Bed
Trek through the sand to a temporary resting place.
Nights are cold in the desert
So pull closer your familiar blanket
The only token of life before.
Backyard
A pool unfit for swimming.
Only a mirage, tempting you to jump in.
Beyond it the desert disappears
Into lush bushes and citrus trees,
Trees
That wave in the desert wind
And welcome you home.
