I believe they were unaware of this punishment system. They must have believed they would be allowed to act freely without being seized.

That is relative.

Most of them have a violent and fiery temper... I admit it will be entertaining to watch them succumb to their boundless rage.

That is relative... it is bound to your abilities. But. I always prefer to avoid unpleasant surprises.
