[002] Video | Day | In a heartbeat

Nov 13, 2011 12:42

[It was just another day in the city of Promenade. Death got up, got clean, had a bite to eat-- even though she really didn't have to-- grabbed her mask, and started out the door. As the psychopomp made her way through the streets, she looked to the sky, wishing she could feel the change in season. She could try to dream up some snow, but it might just end up like in those cartoons, with a little cloud over her head, spitting snow.

The walk to work was enjoyable, as it always was. Once at the Pie Hole, Death dug into her pocket, pulling out her key. The bell over the door gave a little *brrring* of announcement at her entrance. The shop was dark, save for the few spotlights, kept on low so it was never completely dark.

Death frowned slightly, glancing to the clock. Seven o'clock. Ned should be up by now. Perhaps he'd just overslept or forgot to set his alarm. Death crossed through the shop to the door leading up to Ned's apartment. She took the stairs quietly, the soles of her shoes whispering against the wooden steps.

At the door to Ned's apartment, Death knocked gently, calling his name. She paused, lowering her hand, waiting to hear any movement within. After two minutes of silence, Death lifted her hand and knocked again, louder this time. When another two minutes passed and still no reply, Death used the spare key to unlock the door.

Stepping inside, Death glanced towards the kitchen-- empty.

Passed the living room-- empty.

Bathroom-- empty.

When she reached the bedroom, she knocked on the door gently as she opened it.] Ned, you awake? It's ten after seven and I was won--

[The words died on her tongue when she opened the door wide enough to peek inside. The bed was made, the room was empty. Death stepped further into the room, moving to sit on the bed as she pulled out her PORTAL and moved to summon Ned's name off her contacts list. But there was no 'Ned' on the list.

The horrible realization struck her, but the realization was from ten minutes ago, when the Pie Hole's inner lights weren't on and Ned wasn't in the back, starting on the pies. Her heart sank like a stone, falling and falling to thump against the floor-- at least, it felt like it. Emotion welled up inside the Endless in a way it hadn't in a long, long, long time.]

[Death switches on the PORTAL, broadcasting to all.]

For those of you that knew him, Ned, the piemaker, is gone. Apologies for bothering those that didn't.

[Death sniffles, lifting her hand to press against her nose for a moment.] Despite this...turn of events, the Pie Hole will remain open. So, [Her throat tightens up on her at the 'so' and she takes a moment to clear it.] for those of you that are new to the city, I invite you to come and pick out your complimentary 'Welcome to the City' pie.

[Death grimaces as another swell of emotions works its way through her and her vision blurs. She looks off to the side and ends the transmission.]
