Hopefully I will not be a terrible student. I know how to prepare tea and things that have instructions, but when it comes to meals a little more detailed... the results are not always edible.

Oh, spicy foods would be perfect. I'm just making a lot of small dishes, really. They're to be offerings, so they don't have to be full meals or servings.

[He gets out a cook book where there are some (supposedly) simply curry dishes. But from all the pots and pans in the sink, and the fresh wastebasket... they were not.]

My ancestors. It's part of a tradition back home. It would be easier to just dream them up, but my mother and I always made them ourselves.

[Laurent things about his next words for a bit.] We do it for many reasons, most of them selfish and the most important one it was to have the gods happy and not meddling in our lives too much. It was different before the war, people looked at gods differently.

First we wash our hands and the groceries. And then we heat oil in a pan until it is hot but before it is smoking. [Laurent moves to the sink and washed his hands.] Never cook with smoking oil, there needs to be enough oil to cook whatever you're going to eat.

[He is curious about this now. Gods meddled in the affairs of mortals whether they liked it or not, to preserve the balance of the universe, or if someone meddled in their affairs. They mostly made offerings to make sure that they knew they were being respected, and to help spirits in the afterlife.]

Of course. I believe my grandmother warned me about that once... and different oils burn at different temperatures.
