"Can't even shout, can't even cry
The Gentlemen are coming by
Looking in windows, knocking on doors
They need seven and they might take yours'.
Can't call Mum
Can't scream a word
You're going to die screaming and you won't be heard."

[That night, the strange, twisted little nursery rhyme sounds over the PORTAL network in the voice of an older British man ( Read more... )

[ Buffy'd be disturbed by hearing that rhyme again, but for the voice it's in. She thinks, at first, that she might be completely out of her mind. But then... No. Can't be. ] It isn't the Gentlemen, Giles.

[ Wait. The name just kind of slipped out. Did she really just say - ] Giles? [ Okay, voice and video sync up, but she could be going out of her mind. That happens to people here. ]

Ooh, this had better not be a dream, or I'm going to have some serious one-on-one grouchy no-fun Buffy time with the King and Queen...

It's not Hell. It's Promenade. And according to the locals, we've always been here. All of us. We're just... Waking up. [ There's a pause, and she actually gives him a smile. ] You have no idea how happy I am to see you. Dawn's gonna freak.

...Buffy?

[Her former Watcher is a little too stunned by the sight of her to return the smile at first, and it shows on the video screen.] What are...I, I mean, how are...w-waking up?

[He shakes his head as if to clear it before smiling quietly at Buffy from the other end of the PORTAL.]

The feeling is entirely mutual. It's good to see you again, Buffy.

...are you all right?

I'm fine. It's... Complicated here, but it's actually not all that bad. We kinda go mute and not-talky at night because the King can't talk? And I guess the King and Queen want everyone to feel equal to them in some way or another. I figure it's this whole big 'we're your friends not just big power' thing.

[ Aaand back to that waking up thing. ]

Basically, they think we've been here the whole time. Asleep. And that what we remember about our lives are a dream. So, basically... Remember how I told you about the demon that made me think everything was a crazy delusion? It's like that. Minus the crazy.

Oh, wonderful. Out of the frying pan and into the fire. I've always hated that sort of boss.

The fact that said King is powerful enough to enforce this is just...worrying.

[Aaand back to that, yes.]

I can...see the parallels, yes

...it doesn't sound as though it's minus the insanity in the slightest, though. Still. Better that than something like the First Slayer. The former, at least, allows for our survival [a pause, a wavering, strange pause, before Giles catches his mental bearings again] regardless of the world we're "supposed" to belong to.

The whole city is fueled by our thoughts and dreams. My guess is that they've just been here long enough - maybe even from the get-go - to control everything else in the meantime. It's worrying, but so far, they haven't posed a big threat.

[ She gives a slightly amused smile. ]

I meant literal insanity, Giles. The asylum kind. [ Oh. That's odd for Giles. Shouldn't he be cleaning his glasses instead of just plain taking a second? And why after 'survival'? She'll come back to that later. ] Except for the major wig of being stuck here, it's really not so bad. Think of something you really, really want. Something physical you can have, and think about it really hard. It'll show up.

[Wryly:] So did I.

...still, it's true that I've never had hallucinations that are quite as polite as the people I've met so far are proving to be.

[Hm...Giles does sound intrigued by this last.] Is this something you'd like me to test now? I can't think of anything physical at the moment that I'd want.

It feels real. And, I - ... It's a long story, but I've kinda seen what my future here could be like. Ten years from now and everything in between. We got a little time-travely recently, I think.

[ She looks thoughtful for a second, then perks up. ] Think up your favorite book. Or a scone.

[Still looking deeply skeptical, Giles closes his eyes and goes quiet.

About fifteen seconds pass before he opens his eyes, looking startled, and looks off to the right. He gets up and moves out of sight of the PORTAL. When he returns, it's with a tea cup, apparently full of tea.

A sip, before he lets himself communicate again.]

...impressive.

Told you so.

[ Anyway back to business because, man, how British can you BE, Giles? Really.~ ]

Okay, so, usually when people get here they stay in these giant houses with a bunch of other people that just got here? But I've got Mom's house, if you want a place to crash. Even have an extra room, since Willow's not here. It might be easier to get to the weird dreaminess of this.

...Willow was here?!

Woah, woah! Calming down now. Willow hasn't been here. I just meant... the room that was her room before Sunnydale went Craterville is open.

[ Okay. So confused now. Beyond. ]

You sound kind of on the shocked spectrum that she could've been, though. What's got you wigged?
