For my New Year's Resolution...or newest scheme to end up failing...
Actually following through on my low salt diet.
I should have been stricter back when I was originally very sick, but I'm infamous for breaking the rules with food restrictions.
They told me no potatoes...I ate potatoes anyway.
Limit soda...BUSTED!
No gorging on salty foods...TOO LATE!
The only food I've really decreased in eating severely has been sugary foods. I don't really care for cake, candy, or chocolates anymore. I mean, I'll have a bite of chocolate, or a tiny slice of cake, but other than that, most sugary foods I usually ate a bit of I eat minimally.
ANYWAY..
I've already taken the initiative to read the food labels carefully. I've always read them since I was in elementary school. Kids at the breakfast table called me weird for studying them, but my thinking was "someday reading the labels will become important for me".
And ta da, I have Lucas!
As weird as it sounds, a low salt diet really isn't that hard to follow. It just means eating more fruits and vegetables in place of what you would normally snack on, like potato chips and salty crackers. Unfortunately, fruits and veggies were never really "snack foods" for me, as Mum practically gave up on us eating them as snacks when we hit adolescence. We wanted the fruit snacks, or potato chips, or cookies, crackers, candy...that kind of stuff.
I've taken baby steps to get used to the lower salt diet.
:: I've stopped buying the uber-salty canned soups and Chef Boyardee cans in favor of a lower salt (per serving) soup.
:: For the past few days, I've had a little bowl of salad with dressing and croutons. I try not to overdress the salad, since a little can go a long way if mixed properly.
:: I've started eating smaller portions of food. Not by my choice, to be honest. Since Lucas showed up, my appetite has been a carousel of ups and downs - some days I don't stop eating, some days I wish food would leave me alone.
But smaller portions make room for more smaller portions, which in turn could open me up to try new things.
:: I switched from getting regular deli meats, to lower salt deli meats. Unfortunately, I just like the low salt ham. I can't get myself to eat the low salt turkey. I'm not too incredibly picky about cheese, low salt or not, so that doesn't bother me as much.
:: Cooking fresh certainly does make a difference over frozen dinners. I've picked up the slight habit of if I make it fresh the day of, I won't eat it the next day as leftovers. At least it'll teach me to learn portion control while cooking. But then again, I have four dogs and four other people in the house...so leftovers can be for them. :)
:: As the year passes, I'll slowly start adding fruits and veggies to substitute what snacks I would eat. I'm going to use
eilonnwy's dietary guidelines to do better. Although hers is based on food allergies, it is a good guideline to borrow. After all, hers is full of fruits and veggies :D
I hope you don't mind,
eilonnwy ^^;;
I think that's it.
Oh...and SNOW!!! :D
