ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
> I...have been wanting to tell a story like this for a very, very long time. I've kind of been preparing for it, I guess, by writing fantasy AUs in every fandom I've landed in. Some of them did well and some of them were just plain goofy, and I love them all. But this has been the chance I've been waiting for: the chance to create a new world, to breathe new life into familiar characters.
> The firestarter half of this story comes almost straight out of the X-Men comics. Charles Xavier was briefly host to a portion of the Phoenix Force - and that gave me the amazing image of the XFMC Charles Xavier with wings of flame.
> In the early days of drafting Fire Forged, images like
this showed up on Tumblr, which then gave me the idea of Erik as a blacksmith, and holding a sword aloft. I can't say thank you enough to the people creating these things; they were definitely instrumental to this world and the characters in it.
> And on that note, my profound thanks and appreciation to the friends who helped me put together this story and this world.
To the amazing
madsmurf, collaborator and comrade in arms - thank you. Thanks for signing up for this with me. Thank you for the gorgeous images.
To Tybalt, dear friend, eagle-eyed beta, and co-plotter - I couldn't have done this without you. The world of Crucible exists, and the story of Fire Forged has a sequel, because of you.
To
kiyala and
zanzando, cheerleaders and partners in crime, sources of inspiration, who lent their ears to my whining and to my squee in equal measure.
To
papercutperfect, the Charles to my Erik, first and best RP partner. Thanks for being such amazing rocket fuel; thanks for the insights; thanks for the pompoms and for being your wonderful self. Much love from your faraway shark.
To the Tumblr gang and the Twitter timeline and the LJ f-list: we often cannot see each other; we often mourn that we can't meet in real life. Please, please, know that each and every one of you has been instrumental to the creation of Crucible. You're all lovely people and I want to cram you all into some bar or some lovely garden so we can drink to each other and sing "Twist and Shout" at the tops of our voices.
> And once again, I owe my heart and my sanity and my smiles to my SO - who asked me to marry him exactly one week before I started drafting this story.
Thank you for making jokes about guys who look like mice and guys who smile like sharks. Thank you for cheering me on as the word count went up and up and up. Thank you for talking about music and movies and Doctor Who. Thank you for feeding me ice cream and buying me banana daiquiris. You've always had my heart, dearest, and this world is for you.
