I just got back from a much needed visit to LA - two glorious days that went by way, way too fast. Anyway, on Friday night I attended the LA premiere of “The Savages” at the AFI Film Festival and it was one hell of an amazing night. Here’s a brief recap for those who care…
I went in at about 6:15 and was ushered to a place to sit. Anyway, I turned around and noticed behind me a trio of seats reserved for Mark Ruffalo. It never really occurred to me that Mark Ruffalo might be there but within minutes I found myself sitting less than five feet from my favorite actor. Despite my best efforts not to, I did decided to go for it and briefly introduced myself and told him how much I loved his work. I figured I may never get the chance again and he was really nice and gracious.
Shortly, all the VIPs filed in and AFI Tribute to Laura Linney which preceeded the film, began. I have been a huge fan of Laura Linney for years … ever since “You Can Count On Me” haha and it was so insane to be there. Anyway, Mark Ruffalo got up and spoke about his experiences of working with Laura on Ken Longeran’s film and he definitely managed to make a hilarious analogy between Hollywood and a chicken coup. After that, Laura’s other film “brother”, Philip Seymor Hoffman got up and spoke about working with Laura Linney on “The Savages”.
Then some reporter from LA Weekly interviewed her for about 20 minutes. Poor thing had laryngitis and a broken finger but still managed to provide a lot of insight about working in the industry and dealing with a lot of the pratfalls actors face in their career. It was really interesting to hear her perspective since I have admired her work for so long.
Anyway after the tribute was a screening of her new movie “The Savages”. I was so excited to see the film because I had read the script a year and a half ago when I was interning for Scott Rudin and instantly knew it was going to be an amazing movie. The parts were tailor made for Laura Linney and Philip Seymor Hoffman. I skipped out right after the movie started ‘cause I was dying of thirst and on my way to the consession stand, I saw Laura Linney and a whole bunch of other people including the director of the movie, Tamara Jenkins standing outside the theater. On my way back, I went up and told Laura how much I loved her work and how excited I was to see the new movie. She was incredibly sweet and we chatted it up for a few minutes before I ducked back into the theater to watch the movie.
The film was amazing and in no way disappointing. I always love it when I find films that are hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time and “The Savages” epitomizes that kind of movie. I really hope it receives a ton of accolades come Oscar season. Anyway, after the movie I made my way to the elevators and as I was waiting for it come - this guy with a sauve British accent asked me “Did you like the movie?”. I looked up and discovered the mystery Brit was infact… Orlando Bloom. I must say he is super friendly and insanely gorgeous in person. What an awesome night!!
The whole trip was incredibly fun, I got to see old friends and sleep in my own apartment for a night. I can’t wait to get back to LA after Christmas. I miss all you guys!
