It seems, from the book, that this list was made after the New York Times Book Review editor asked about 200 editors, writers, critics and other members of the literature world what the single best American novel published in the last 25 years was. So, I guess a bunch of people didn’t want to play, and it came down to about 125 votes. So here's the list they came up with, the top five in order of votes received and then 5 others in no order that received multiple votes.
(Please remember, this is from The Book of Books by Les Krantz and Tim Knight)
1. Beloved by Toni Morrison, 1987
2. Underworld by Don DeLillo, 1997
3. Blood meridian by Cormac McCarthy, 1985
4. Rabbit Angsrom: The Four Novels by John Updike, 1995
5. American Pastoral by Phillip Roth, 1997
6. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole, 1980
7. Housekeeping by Marilyn Robinson, 1980
8. Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin, 1983
9. White Noise by Don DiLillo, 1985
10. The Counterlife by Phillip Roth, 1986
So there you have it. I hope you enjoy this list, and if you've read any I'd love to hear about it!
