I find it odd, that 50% of marriages will end in divorce. You have people getting married and barely making it a year. Or serial marrieds, who get married 5 or 6 (8 if you're Larry King) time. I also read something saying that in 75% of marriages at least one partner will have an affair. But for some reason people seem to think that same sex marriage is what's going to destroy the "sanctity of the institution
( ... )
Everytime that I think of the fact that someone is able to vote on my rights based on how they feel is just the most baffling and upsetting thing. I can't think about it to much, because I start getting out of control with my emotions.
I'm very bi-polar, that's why I have to take medicine to keep it under control. LOL!
I was going to comment with essentially the same things, aside from the Republican perspective and Ainsley Hayes quote ;D The whole "sanctity of marriage" argument drives me up the wall. So, it's okay for straight couples to marry on a whim and divorce when it doesn't work out in less than a year, but in order for my partner and I to be governmentally recognized we have to jump through a series of hoops to be in the Domestic Partner Registry, which doesn't even provide a parity of rights?! If I can find a rector to perform the ceremony, then it should be no one else's business. The argument against gay marriage is, to me, a red herring that many on the conservative Right use to rile up their base and get people to the polls. It's also an excuse to formally legalize homophobia, which I, as a civil libertarian, find disgusting and repugnant.
Great, now I'm all riled up and pissed off, too. I should have followed y'all's examples and kept this shorter so as to curtail my anger this early in the morning.
