Right, I KNOW I said I would give my opinion of each week...and that hasn't happened.
But I am right now watching XFactor, as taped using Nan’s new Sky Plus! So it can be paused and whatnot so I can take the time I have to write all MY opinions of each person!
Niki:
1) The first song was v good, v well sung. Couldn’t actually fault a note. A risk, doing an Eva Cassidy song, and she DID do it well.
But, I was bored. I don’t think it was the right choice. As Sharon said, too laid back for this point in the show. Simon was bitchy though!
And what was she wearing? She could have been going to work (ie, office/behind bar) or nipping into the pub! She needed to make an impact. And she didn’t.
2) Now with this song, it appears she has taken Sharon’s advice, and sung a ‘belter’. Taking another risk, she chose a Whitney Houston song; One Moment in Time.
Firstly; wtf was she wearing?! She looked huge!
And this; is one of MY SONGS!!!!!!!
She cannot hit the high notes; the ‘destiny’ and ‘eternity’ without going off. And then the ‘shine’?! omg!!!
I KNOW how hard that song is to sing, I have sung that myself for a good 2 years. But I know I can sing that better than she did.
She is usually v good, but the last few weeks, she has had some belters that she hasn’t done justice (Power of Love anyone?). This was one of those songs.
Leon
First, I must note; how much I LOVED his little fanboy-squeeness when he met Michael Buble, and you could see Buble squeeing back at his British Mini-Me! So cute!
1) The Very Thought of You; Started too low for the little boy; ergo ended up drastically out of tune for the first chunk of the song. Rather cheesy, with the Sinatra wannabeeness, and the NYC view behind. You could also see he was terrified; he hands were shaking when he was standing by the piano! Simon was right, the bit with the girl was corny. But at that point, he was getting more in tune.
What saved it? The high note; the long ‘Above!’ near the end? THAT is what caught my attention. And THAT is what saved that performance.
After what the judges said, it looked like he was about to cry!!
2) Leather pants!!!!!
I LOVE this song; I wrote a House/Wilson fic based off the James Taylor version, but this, was jazzy and swingy and upbeat and I really enjoyed it!
The boy has his confidence, and it really shows. He owned the stage, and there wasn’t a note out of place. He was working hard, and he challenges himself every week. He totally deserves to be there, and he IS the Dark Horse.
Rhydian!!!!!!
There are never words to describe this man. He is a shoe-in for the prize, but nevertheless, he works his hardest every week, and deserves the acclaim he gets.
1) Bridge Over Troubled Water; another wonderful song.
Never heard an operatic version - until now.
Pitch perfect, as always. Very soulful. Calm and collected; no show-boating for this song - not needed. The dancers were weird though.
The end - the belting out, was brilliant. Not a not or breath out of place.
Absolutely flawless. I don’t know if I agree with Simon saying it was the best performance of the show so far, but it was flawless.
2) Cudos! The Liverpudlian in me adored the song choice from the outset; You’ll Never Walk Alone.
But was he playing it safe with this choice? We shall see.
He looks smooth; normal for a change. Nice suit.
You can hear how much he loves this song, the emotion he puts into it. And when he finally started to belt it out; the hairs DID stand up on my neck!
The ‘Never’? omg!!!!
Flawless. And for someone raised on the Gerry & the Pacemakers version; something which could NEVER be beaten, and will always be a Liverpudlian anthem? Perfect.
Same Difference
Yes they are unique, yes they are cheesy, but I still like them!
1) Chain Reaction: LOVE the original, but this was more the Steps version.
Cannot fault it (the odd off-note from the girl, but pretty good for the most part), but not as good as either the original or the cover. The set-up (the circus thing) was weird. Cannot actually say it was bad; it was a darn good performance, but it was a weird song choice. Didn’t show their voices off.
But they’re such NICE PEOPLE! I cannot help but like them!
2) Yet another cover, and similar group; S Club 7.
But I totally understand the girl relating to the song; Never Had a Dream Come True. I had problems in school, bullying because I liked to perform, and I can sympathise - although I think they’re playing on her past a bit to garner sympathy.
The song was flawless. It was perfect choice for the two of them - it really fitted a boy/girl duo. They put their hearts and souls into that (especially Sarah!) and they deserved to be there!
x factor,
