 so i've finally found a professor who has money to support a graduate student, but as a result of my inabilities to ever be happy/appreciative/satisfied in life, i'm beginning to think that grad school isn't the right path for me.  firstly, i'm concerned that if  (and when) i fail my oral dissertation, the department will not award a masters

i agree with both of the above comments. as someone who also hasn't figured out what she wants to do :-), i say that it's good to throw yourself at something you think you want, try it out, and then see how that feels -- just like you're doing now. and if it doesn't feel right, you've gained experience and knowledge of what you do and don't like, and more of an idea of what you DO ultimately want. but if you don't go for it you're never going to know (either way - that this turns out to feel right, or that this wasn't what you thought it would be). and it's true, you're still young!!! because imagine sticking through something because you feel like you're supposed to, and then getting to be 50 with a husband and a mortgage and 2 kids and realizing that you really, really need to change. it's much more difficult to take a leap at that point.

i think all jobs have that 30% that you have to put up with to do the 70%. and now, the joy of finding what that 30% looks like for both you and me ... or, i mean, haha, what that 70% looks like ...
