My mom and I were browsing around a Japanese dollar store earlier tonight, when a woman approached us and engaged in the following exchange:

woman: Could i ask you a question?
me: Oh sure, but we're not employed here
woman: Oh it's okay that you are not employees, but you guys are Japanese, so I figured...
my mom and i: *blink* no, we're not Japanese ( Read more... )

lol aw thanks chung! i admittedly did stutter a bit when i asked what we could help her with, but my mom seemed to be absolutely unfazed by the whole thing. maybe she's used to racial profiling...but i'd like to think she just missed what the woman had said to us because of the language barrier ^-^;;

the lady did apologize afterwards, which i should probably include in my post! lol thanks for catching that! :D

haha that's interesting! one time this asian man and his son asked if i was japanese, to which i started spouting off something in japanese (with horrendous grammar) about how i wasn't, but took a bit of the language in high school. then they got this confused look on their face and said they were chinese. ^-^;;

thank you for sharing! ♥

Hahahahaha, awww that kinda sucks. I know what you mean - she probably figured you guys were Japanese since you guys look Asian and are in a Japanese store or something. Tsk tsk to her though, still presumptuous...

aw thanks for understanding, joann! what's worse though is that i don't think i would have minded as much if she was asian! @_@ or maybe it was that she said out like her assumption about our being japanese, instead of first asking us our ethnicity or the question she had in mind...

One time we were gathering for wushu in the basketball court, and some guy was shooting baskets, and I guess he decided it was a good opportunity to show off his Chinese because he's white. So he kept saying "xie xie" and "dui bu qi" in a really bad accent, and mixing it in with English like "again, xie xie." I had to fight the urge to be like "You know, we all speak English. And we already have a white guy who speaks better Chinese than you."

*pat pat* ( '-')>

That's funny. Am I the only one who doesn't get offended if random people try to speak Chinese/Japanese to me? I really don't care.

haha i think it'd be interesting to try and communicate in chinese or japanese with strangers, but something about the way she was assured of our race kind of rubbed me the wrong way. anyway, it was just a funny experience overall~ ^-^

btw, i love the cakes and pictures you've been posting, rachel! they make me hungry and want to travel!
