attack of the killer...

ROACHES.
yes that's right, i got home tonight after 5 hours of being away and forgetting to turn the lights on that a family of roaches (i like to call them mr. hideously ginormous, ms. disgustingly huge, their teenage son george the giant, and their triplets, big, bigger, and biggest) had taken this opportunity to infest my kitchen. thankfully my neighbor kris was home or else i would have had no one to hear my screams. she gave me Raid and moral support and now i've barricaded myself in my bedroom for the rest of the night.
i went out around 4 with sue and three girls from my class to a new store called DIY where you make your own soap and candles. after the soap had dried we went to a restaurant with aisles and aisles of models of food - you point to the ones you want and they bring them to your table. then we did a little shopping (i scored two chinese pop cd's) and around 9 i came home and the nightmare started. yes i know it's small compared with what the thailand people had to deal with, and that my apartment is pretty sweet in general but STILL. ROACHES.
anyway. things are going pretty well with teaching, i've given my kids two big projects (debates and a newspaper) to occupy their time until class is finished. however, they have started to realized that i never follow through on my threats (like punishment for talking, for being late, etc.) so they're getting a little squirrely. meh. i figure their schools are so strict during the year that they might as well have an easy break.
we didn't go to the beach last weekend because it was raining bullets (i know you usually sweat them) so i spent a nice two days sleeping, reading, and shopping. we went to a chinese catholic church which was interesting. when the opening hymn started, these little chinese nuns next to us noticed we weren't singing along, so they smilingly walked over and handed us the hymnal, as if God would miraculously give us the inspiration of how to read and sing chinese music - nuns are the same all over the world.
one thing that makes me happy is that when i wake up in the morning, i can hear traditional chinese flute music coming from the park where the old people are doing their tai chi. old people all run wild here, rather than moving to florida or going to homes, and it's great. they sit in parks all day playing cards and probably complaining or something, it feels like much more of a community.
another thing that makes me happy is that every single time i walk to the grocery store, which is about twice a day, at least two guys in the high rise next to it are in their showers and just belting out pop ballads to their hearts' content. yesterday one of them concluded with a hearty "ah-wooooo!" and it reminded me of both andy mcgee and singing first floor hallway girl.
alright. well. in one week i will be on my way to hong kong, and three days after that i will be on my way home...very strange. can't wait to see you all! thank you for reading, goodnight.
