Knife making class wrap-up.

So, I spent all week taking a class in knife making. Instruction was a bit rough, and not as efficient as my ideal, but it was still good. We made one knife to "utility" grade (not finely polished, etc.) to do the cut/chop/shave/bend test with. It was this massive blade almost 12" long, etc. We had to cut through a hanging 1" hemp rope with it, chop through a 2x4, then still have it shave our arm hair, and finally pass the bend test. The bend test is to clamp the blade tip in a vise and bend the blade over 90 degrees. The blade should bend, but not break/crack. My knife passed. (This is a mock run of a small part of the ABS Journeymen Blade Smith test.) Some photos up on flickr, more will be posted soon, along with videos.

We also started a smaller, more practical blade--a hunting knife. Still need to finish polishing that out by hand, sharpen it, put a guard and handle on it, etc. It's been forged, ground and heat treated so far. The hand sanding takes a *long* time.
