Interesting, but he doesn't address the pronunciation of "zine"
This guy's arguments for "mike" vs. "mic" as the abbreviation of "microphone" are pretty good summary of why I pronounce "zine" with a long "i". (Just like it's spelled, vs. pronouncing it like "zeen").
