[For Jason] Christmas

Dec 27, 2010 10:29

She keeps it together until she's absolutely certain Baze isn't following her anymore. She tamps that emotion down, shelves the total rejection of the past two months until she knows for sure she's alone, and only then does she let go, a petite girl in hastily-donned winter wear over her pajamas, plunked down onto a tree stump in the middle of the most festive forest imaginable, crying her eyes out on Christmas morning.

It's mid-crying jag that she starts to wonder what the hell she's going to do now, not just in general but today, right this moment, and she thinks of Jason's offer. Swallowing back another sob, she looks up, eyes bright with tears, and peers uncertainly into the trees. He's weird, he likes trees, and he likes following her around without her knowing it; it's not such a crazy thought that he might be there, right now.

"If you're actually lurking in one of these trees, I just want you to know that when your girlfriend is crying, you're generally supposed to comfort her," she says, then frowns at a passing squirrel.
