I watched Die Hard 2 tonight for the first time ever (yes, the first time ever). The first two movies were essentially the same - John McClane uses his cop mastermind to not only defeat a terrorist organization affecting some sort of institution, but in doing so he also saves his wife. While I have to say that its plot is not as good as the first, the film as a whole was incredibly entertaining. The action scenes were over-the-top, but done in such a tasteful manner that kept my attention throughout. All in all, a great action movie and a great movie overall.

It seems like the movies I enjoy the most are from the late 80s and early 90s (Die Hard 2 being one of them, released in 1990). I don't know why this is. It could be a number of things - the cinematography, nostalgia, the common themes in movies at that time. But really, I just don't have a clue.

Which leads me to a larger point - why do I cast fond opinions on the 80s? I often think to myself "Man, the 80s were some good times." But I've gotta tell ya - 2 years and 7 days of living in the 80s, and I don't remember a damn thing (probably because I got into acid when I was a toddler, but I'll save that story for another entry). In all seriousness, all my fondness of this decade is based on the representations in movies, pictures, and music that were produced in those 10 years. Maybe part of me feels more connected to a simpler kind of life I think the 80s exuded, such as the lack of cell phones, laptops and whatnot. But I would guarantee that if I were born 20 years earlier, say in 1967, I would probably not be thinking "Man, it sure feels good to be alive in the 80s" once my teenage years rolled around.

Here's what I've ultimately concluded - a decade is a decade is a decade. They are only romanticized as "a good time" years after they happen. I'm sure that when the 2020s roll around, kids born in 2007 and 2008 will do the same exact thing about the 2000s. I guess people will never be able to shake their desire to have things they way "they once were."
