Sherlock = Michael Jackson?

I know everyone is probably going talk about the music video, but I'm stuck on the song. I didn't realize until I watched the music video but the style of the song is so familiar to me. I had to ignore the dubstep for a minute because I guess I just happen to be a part of that small minority that isn't head over heels for dubstep.

But it hit me finally, Michael Jackson.

Don't believe me? Take a listen to the Dangerous, HIStory 2nd disc, and Blood is on the Dance Floor EP. That thrumming bass, the breaking/shattering glass, the breaks in the beat, the voices. Hell Minho's line at the end of Jonghyun's in the bridge is completely Michael from Blood on the Dance Floor.

Now don't get ahead of yourself. I'm not at all upset with this realization. In fact, I'm fucking delirious with joy.

I love MJ. MJ was the first American artist I ever listened to and he set the bar so high that not a single artist has ever been able to top his musical majesty. Michael was a singer, a creator, a performer, a musical prodigy. And Michael's distinct style was his ability to grow. From the funk of On the Wall to the rock of Bad to the thrumming bass of HIStory to the effervescent and yet undeniable strength of Invincible. Michael is to this date the top magician of modern day music. He is our Beethoven, our Bach, our Mozart. No one has managed to meet his capabilities.

The fact that SHINee managed to make a song in his style without sounding like a cheap rip-off makes me hysterical with joy. I can hear the Michael in the song, but I also hear the SHINee.

Jonghyun's roaring vocals are so unique and his ability to just project his voice is unmatched. I know that in rankings, he comes beneath Kyuhyun and Yesung in SM, but I'll be honest. I find Kyuhyun and Yesung to have somewhat limited emotional ranges in that they can't adapt their voices to differing genres. Kyuhyun and Yesung are truly ballad kings, but when it comes to pop and rock, Jonghyun's voice blows them out of the water. His voice is amazing in that he can sing almost any genre and adapt to it so easily. I think the only one who comes as close to him in that is Changmin.

And Minho, damn I'm so proud of him in this song. He sounds like a beast. I can't stand dubstep but he and Key together make it work. They don't gloss over and blend their voices in. They scream it raw and I love it. And can I just say I'm so happy with how Onew and Taemin sound so masculine in this? Too often, SM forces them to loss the depth of their voices, but this time around, Taemin and Onew sound like the guys they are, especially Onew. I don't care that his stage name means "Soft". Let him be hard and forceful because damn if he doesn't sound amazing.

Sherlock is a work of art for any SHINee fan and for any Michael fan because of how these guys have managed to make a tribute to the world's greatest. It's an amazing song, the layering is utterly beautiful and now that I can see the nuances, I'm not surprised SM had to make two separate songs to get this sound. Michael was amazing and to come as close to replicating his style as they've done is noting short of amazing.

For the first time, I have to say, well done SM. Well done.
