Summary: Steve and Tony prepare for the Monster Ball.
”Tony, I’m not sure about this,” Steve said, checking himself out in the mirror. When Tony had gotten two tickets to a Lady Gaga concert - Steve barely knew who she was, although he did find her songs to be good - and that they had to dress for the occasion, Steve had expected to wear something casual. Or dressy.
What he didn’t expect was to wear a floor-length red rubber dress with poofy sleeves, together with large amounts of what looked like sparkly eye shadow in a matching color. The material was tight, almost tighter than his uniform; although his lower body felt surprisingly free compared to the pants of his Captain America costume, the upper part of his outfit looked almost molded to his skin. Tony had made choking sounds when Steve had finished putting it on, his eyes going wide. Steve had blushed slightly after seeing Tony’s expression, pleased to get such a reaction from him.
“Nonsense. You look great!” Tony said, eyeing him approvingly. “You just need one more item to complete the look.”
Steve was about to ask what he meant, but before he could utter a word, Tony reached into a paper bag that he had gotten from the costume shop where the outfits were purchased.
Steve saw red, sparkly fabric, and then Tony held up the items in question - and Steve backed away a couple of steps.
Tony was holding up a pair of crab claws. Sparkly crab claws. On closer inspection, Steve saw that every inch if the fabric was covered in sequins.
“No, Tony. I refuse to wear those.”
“Come on, Steve. You wore everything else! You’re even wearing the knee-high stiletto boots!”
Steve was now blushing furiously, his face matching the outfit. “But no one can see them, Tony. Those…claws will be completely visible!”
“But, Steve-“
“No.” Steve had drawn himself to his full height - made even taller thanks to the stiletto heels - and crossed his arms, jaw set. Tony looked at him pleadingly for a moment, before deciding to give up, pouting as he put the claws back in the bag.
“Fine. Don’t wear them,” Tony said, reaching for another the paper bag that contained his outfit before heading for the door to the master bedroom, where Steve had just changed. “Just sit down while I get changed.” The door closet behind him, and Steve was left outside alone.
He tried to sit down, but quickly found out that it was almost impossible. Even though the skirt wasn’t very tight, sitting down was still cumbersome; Steve opted to stand instead. Tony would take some time changing clothes, and Steve wasn’t the type to stand still. He was just about to head to the kitchen, when he heard the sound of footsteps. Someone was approaching.
Steve panicked - the other Avengers were all supposed to be off duty. The prospect of anyone seeing him dressed like this was enough to make Steve want to hide - Luke and Logan would never stop laughing if they saw him.
“Hey, anyone home?” Steve recognized the voice immediately, and knew that this wouldn’t end well. “I forgot my camera over here the other holy mother of god.”
Even though his mask, Steve knew that Peter’s eyes were wide as saucers. Jessica Drew appeared behind him, also dressed in her superhero outfit. “Hey, hurry up and get-“ she said, stopping mid-sentence to stare at Steve, before covering her mouth with her hand to stop a giggle fit. Peter was still staring at him, like Steve had grown an extra head or two.
“Cap, what are you wearing?” Peter asked, and just as Steve was about to answer, the door to the bedroom opened, and Tony stepped out. This time, Jessica used both her hands to cover her mouth, shaking; Peter and Steve turned around to look at Tony, and Steve suddenly forgot how to breathe.
Tony was wearing a sleeveless red and gold leotard with a matching hood, two golden leather belts around his waist and a pair of red leather gloves on his hands. His legs were covered with fishnet stockings, and the boots he had on looked almost like Steve’s boost, but with a lighter shade of red. A large gold chain was hanging off his neck, and when Steve managed to breathe again, he noticed that Tony was wearing lipstick and eyeliner; but hadn’t shaved off his goatee, which made him look slightly peculiar.
Steve wouldn’t admit it in front of Peter and Jessica, but he found Tony to be very sexy at that moment.
“Oh, hey Peter.” Tony said, like coming out dressed in a red leotard while one of your teammates was starting to cry due to contained laughter was the most natural thing in the world. “I thought you were going to spend your day off with MJ.”
Peter didn’t answer, too busy staring at Tony.
“By the way, I found your camera in the kitchen yesterday. I left it on the nightstand; just wait a second while I get it.” Tony said, re-entering the bedroom. Jessica sat down on a nearby chair, biting her lip to prevent her from laughing loudly.
Peter was still in shock. “Did he… I mean, was that a-“ It looked like words were failing him, something which Steve had never seen happen. “Is it Halloween and no one told me?”
Steve wanted to rub his temples, but that would ruin his makeup. “No, Peter. Tony is taking me to a Lady Gaga concert. I didn’t know people dressed like this for her shows, although her name should have tipped me off.”
“…You’re attending the Monster Ball?” Peter asked just as Tony came back with Peter’s camera, giving it to the young man. Steve frowned, feeling confused.
“Monster Ball? I thought we were going to a concert, Tony.”
Tony chuckled. “We are; Monster Ball is the name of the concert. Don’t ask me why,” he added quickly when Steve opened his mouth to ask. “Now come on. We should go, or we’ll be late. Peter, stop staring.”
Jessica had stopped shaking, although she was still covering her mouth. “Tony,” she said, apparently doing her best to stay calm, “you look great. Really.”
“Thanks, Jess.”
“You look just like Grace Jones.”
Tony turned beet red and, and Jessica started to laugh again. “Hey, at least I didn’t wear the Kermit coat!” Jessica’s laughter intensified, and Tony groaned in frustration. He grabbed Steve’s hand, heading for the hallway when Peter asked them to stop. “What is it, Peter?” Tony asked, turning around together with Steve to face the younger man.
Peter had the camera ready, and before Steve could protest, he took a picture of them. Tony glared at Peter while Steve looked mortified.
“Just wanted a memento. MJ is going to love this. Have fun on your hot date, little monsters!”
Steve looked even more confused, and Tony dragged him away as fast as he could in heels; Peter and Jessica’s laughter followed the pair as they left, and a horrific thought crossed Steve's mind.
"He's not going to sell that picture to the Daily Bugle, right?"
