Canon history:
HereAU history:
Proteus was born as the first son of the King Dymas of Syracuse. He was brought up to become a proper prince and a future king. As time went on in his studies, he grew to have a sailor side to him. Often, he would assist sailors in shipments of goods to neighboring kingdoms across the seas.
One day, while reading up on his studies, he heard a commotion outside his window. A young boy, around his age, was being outnumbered by three thugs with daggers, aiming to dispose of him. That's when Proteus stood at the boy's side and fought along side him to defeat the thugs. The boy he helped was named Sinbad. They became fast friends, until one day, Sinbad left Syracuse on his ship, never coming back. Proteus was disheartened by the action, but continued with his duties for the next ten years.
His kingdom experienced the global explosion of the Black Mist. The kingdom was covered with it like everything else during that time. Once it lifted, Proteus and his father took in note of the damage that the Black Mist had caused. People had ran rampant in anger and despair, causing destruction to the kingdom in certain areas. Not only that, a large number of people were missing from the kingdom itself. Even some of the civilians blamed the king for his foolish actions of not being prepared for something like this. Proteus tried to calm the people of Syracuse, assuring them that there would be some kind of solution to it. And he would find it, no matter what.
A few months following the event, Proteus was approached by his father who handed him an envelope. He told his son of the Disney Academy, who were investigating the Mist. They had more information on the Mist than anyone else did in their own kingdom. Proteus protested, not wanting to leave his father or his kingdom, just in case if there was another Mist outburst. His father reassured him that things would be alright, and insisted he sail to the Disney Academy. There, he could even broaden his studies on the diverse cultures there, and help them in solving the Black Mist.
With a heavy heart, Proteus took up the opportunity and set off towards the Disney Academy.
Personality:
This prince is as loyal as anyone can be. He would be willing to put his life on the line for his kingdom, family, and even his friends. With his loyalty, betrayal by others rubs him the wrong way. If you betray him once, you just may have a second chance with him if you prove your worth to him. Proteus also sticks to the rules, and doesn't bend them for his friends and colleagues. He follows the rules to a T and doesn't let peer pressure or past experiences get in his way. Proteus does not back down from a problem, nor does he turn his back to it. He faces it head on, and if there are consequences, he will take them in stride. There is never an easy way out in Proteus' eyes. There is only the right way to do things, and he always chooses that path.
With all business aside, he does occasionally like to have fun. He drinks and socializes with others whenever time does permit. The prince is modest when it comes to compliments, shaking them off usually and continues on his way. Proteus, being a prince and all, and a future ruler of a kingdom, tends to put other's needs before his own. It was how he was raised, and it won't change anytime soon.
However, if given the topic of thieves and pirates, he rolls his eyes at the thought of them. He frowns upon what their actions consist of, and he won't even let his friend Sinbad steal anything for that matter. When it comes to fighting, he is very good at it, but he never kills his opponents; he knocks them out. He never strikes to kill anyone, even his enemies. If anything, he tries to teach them a lesson. With the challenge of a fight, he never refuses. He loves a good spar here or there as well.
He has a knack of knowing when someone is lying to him, having spent one too many times with Sinbad, whenever he's put on the spot. Having no mother around, and with his father being so busy with his duties, he would teach himself about things, which he loves to do whenever given the opportunity. And thanks to his days on the sea, he has a wide range of cultures under his belt, having been to different kingdoms now and again.
Greatest Fear: His fear consists of failing, and letting down everyone close to him. If he doesn't complete a very important task, he takes it hard. Upsetting those closest to him is also a fear of his, and being betrayed by those closest to him.
What are your plans with this character?: Proteus is pretty sociable, and would probably get along with most people here at the academy. Also, Sinbad needs his BFF around right? Right. And, he is headstrong about trying to find a solution to this Black Mist and to restore his Kingdom to order.
❦ Writing
Third person writing sample:
This past month had been one heck of a ride for Proteus and his crew. Getting past Port Royale was a hassle in itself for them. Pirates had raided their ship and even part of his crew went missing. And being the man he was, he would never leave a single man of his crew behind. It took him two weeks to fight the pirates and regain part of their crew back. He was so thankful to have them back in one piece, but alas, some valuables on the ship were taken. But, Proteus' essentials for his living at the Academy were salvaged.
Proteus sighed deeply as he sat in his captain's quarters, his brooch in his hand, his thick fingers running over the crescent moon shaped emblem. He wouldn't let his kingdom down. With this new opportunity, he'd be able to find more information on this Mist. Even though he missed his kingdom, and missed being by his father's side, to help him in his old age, it was time to take action. And this was it for Proteus. However, his reminiscing was cut abruptly as he heard a cry from one of his crewmen.
Quickly, he stood from his desk and walks out onto the deck soon after. His men were pointing upward, towards what looked to be a floating island. Proteus ran over to the middle of the deck to look up at the island. It... it was fascinating. A real floating island! His eyes slowly widened, along with the smile growing on his face.
"The Academy." he almost breathed.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, they had made it to their destination! Proteus could feel excitement rising in his chest as he rushed back to his quarters, to get his luggage all set. Some of the members of crew even assisted with his luggage and as Proteus slung a bag over his own shoulder. He squinted at the buildings of the Academy, taking in the view before his eyes stopped at it's dock.
He dropped his bag and ran over to the railing again, seeing a familiar ship docked in the mainland. Red-orange sails, mahogany wood decorating it's sides. There was no doubt whose ship that was. He couldn't forget it either, ever since it left Syracuse ten years ago. The prince slowly grins and begins to chuckle, running a hand up into his hair, pushing away from the railing to reclaim his bag. The crew members gave their leader a wary look.
"That scoundrel! He's here too? What are the odds of that? Sinbad, here at the Academy..."
Well, this stay here at the school was going to be an interesting one, even more so than he thought.

*The video flickers on, a few times, as the one operating the communicator is having a bit of difficulty. But, a face does flicker into view*
Blasted thing. I think I have it now. *Proteus leans back in his seat and smooths out the creases in his shirt, clearing his throat*
Greetings students and staff. I am Proteus, your new Swordsmanship teacher here at the Academy. You can sign up for my class whenever you'd like, and I can assure you, we won't be using real swords. Safety is priority, but I can say, after the first few weeks of class, you may start to have a few bruises here or there. *He chuckles lightly before his smile slowly fades*
I have noticed a ship when I came into port. Is... Is there a man named Sinbad here, perchance?
