Nick had always known her better than she knew herself. He knew What a Girl Wanted, to put it bluntly. When she was upset, he was at her doorstep before she even picked up the phone. When she was happy, he took her out to dinner- when he was home, of course. And every time she thanked him. Whether it was with a kiss, a letter, a text- she made sure to let him know how thankful she was that he was around.
When she left him, he still knew what she wanted. He left, he gave her space, and exactly two years later, he came back. Just like she wanted him to. And, this time, she thanked him by letting him come back home. Come back to her.

Miley hated being without Nick. He was her oxygen, it was impossible for her to Breathe without him around. But they were two different people now, and she just had to live without him. When she broke up with Justin, it was because she was sick of being unable to breathe. Justin was just like her oxygen supplyer, but she was just living with him. She didn't love him. So she did the only thing that would be fair for him and left him.
So she ended up meeting up with Nick again because of another Disney video shoot and maybe nothing would ever be the same between them, but she just lived in the moment and took advantage of the time they had together, keeping her oxygen around no matter what. It wasn't easy for her to be around him and know they were nothing but friends, but it was a start.

When he found out that he liked her too, he was shocked. But it didn't matter how different they were for each other, she would always be his Rock and Roll Party Queen.

"Vegas," he replied, "I'm Nick and... And I'm pretty sure we're married." Sure enough, there was a sparkling ring on her left finger that she found when she looked down at her hands.

It was simple. Nick loved Miley. He always had. The way her blue eyes sparkled when she was excited, and especially the way she always understood that he loved her- he really did- no matter how far apart they were. No matter if he was on tour or she was filming her TV show, he loved her.

He had turned to alcohol, turned to other girls, but they never lasted more than a night, and that wasn't what he wanted. But he knew that in reality, he couldn't live with just her picture. So he put it away one night, and it was the most painful thing he had ever done. He cried all night.
Miley kept a picture of him inside of her dresser. She had moved on, married a doctor, but promised Nick that she'd always be there for him. So she still called him a few times, but he never seemed the same. She had to give up, and she couldn't wait for him forever, so she did. She put his Picture in her suitcase, just wondering what had happened to the Nick she used to know. She cried all night.
She saw him with a girl. He asked how she was. She said she was fine (even though she would never be okay without him). She saw that he looked sad. She reminded him of the good times they had together. He smiled for the first time in a while and said that he didn't know if he could go on without her.
