1) Ah, Varas... now the oldest (and probably most famous) of any of my characters.

2) Went for Isaac for it's religious overtones and that it fitted with the biblical theme of the Arethusa. I came up with "Varas", as it generally sounded vaguely cool, I then googled it and found out that it was in fact the name of one of the first Spanish families to colonise America, a rather cool coincidence.

3)a)Varas was created by me and Andy over the summer of 2004 whilst we where taking an "extended tea-break in a cupboard whilst slightly high on cleaning fumes. Originally he was pretty much quite a comedy character/throwaway concept.
b) Varas was originally a secondary back with the original maesltrom secondary rules (i.e 5 points, but no advantages/income), hence combat monkey was the real way to go. I didn't decide to promote him to a primary until quite close to the 4th event.
c)Aside from all the Inquisitorial and Templar inspirations, the main source of inspiration was Friar Karl from Van-Helsing (in particular the line “I'm not a priest... I'm a Friar...”

4) Varas was shot a few times whilst fighting pirates as part of the Middenpoint millita. He won, hence he doesn't have much respect for guns.

5) Contrary to the opinions of the crew of the Arethusa, Varas is in fact... not gay. He's just looking for a special something in a woman...

6)a) I don't think Varas could ever be considered a “ordinary little free islands kit”, he had a strict Merchant upbring by his pious priestly father, and an older sister who became a battle nun... in the free islands. Also, Varas isn't exactly unhappy about the current state of affairs. It's essentially proved everything that he's fought for is right. He does get tired sometimes though and wonder why he isn't dead and being granted access to the paradise of the Merchants Heaven.

b) He ended up with Essen after meeting up with him and noticing two things 1) His idiosyncratic devotion to the Merchant 2) How much he bimbled around.
Varas was stuck by a Divine Revelation, obviously Essen was a Holy man and that he often bimbled into danger, therefore it was obviously Varas' Divine Duty to keep Essen alive!
After a few years Essen headed off to the Free Islands (via the Arethusa), leaving Varas in charge of the Essen's chapel, his 3 brothels and the bakery and he then sent back word for Varas to follow.

C)Firstly he'd probably get suspicious of the Eidolon bearing such a message, and probably declare them Fallen and then stab them. After the third time he heard this from a trustworthy loyal Eidolon, he might start paying attention.
At which point he'd grudgingly obey the order, although he would of course use the Fallen in “an appropriate fashion” (i.e mostly as meat shields...)
